Questions how to keep them apart??

Ok I have a few questions, first Brandy and Buddy are brother and sister they will be 8 months 27th of Nov. The vet is trying to figure out if she has kidney problems and will not spay her and Buddy has a heart murmur and will not neutered him till further tests are done. I'm getting nervous that Brandy will go into heat but the vet said we still have time. How long will she be in heat for? How will I know she is getting close to being in heat? And how do you guys keep them apart from one another I would hate to leave one outside. Ugh

im sorry to hear your pups are having problems.. my Nikki is almost 11 mos, and still has not come into season. (we are waiting anxiously for it to be over :rolleyes: ) so you may still have a few months.. its not uncommon for a boxer bitch to come into season when she 1yr+. Hopefully you can get them spayed/neutered before then, but if not, is there anyone you can leave your little boy w/? (family, or close friend?) I'd start talking to friends and family now, bring up the idea while you still have time! good luck! and if you need a boxer-sitter for a day or so, perhaps i'd be available to sit for ya! :D best of luck!

Thanks Kat We don't have any family around here that doesn't have other male dogs or live in an apartment that doesn't allow pets.... I'll check with people at work.

Actually it is not uncommon for a female to be 2 years old before her first heat... "normal" is anywhere between 7 and 24 months. With that said, age at first heat is something that seems to run in lines, at least to some extent. You could check with her breeder to see if there's a common age amongst her close relatives.

Separate crates will be perfect for keeping them apart.

Do the dog diapers work do they try to pull them off? I know when I was potty training them with the puppy pads on the floor they would shred them. When I put them in the crate should I put them in seperate rooms? Will he go crazy if her crate is next to his?

Check with your vet & see if they can give her the dep. provero shot that will stop her heat cycle, our vet gave them to one of my dogs years ago,she had a shot every 6mths & I think that is the name of it, I always just called it a birth control shot. Hanley

Very cool I didn't know dogs could take it! I will ask him.

You might like to do a little research into the health effects of 'birth control' shots for dogs. Over the years, some of those products have had to be taken off the market... just make sure you know of any potential side-effects, long term effects and that you're very comfortable with any such product anyway.

Crating is a good way of keeping them apart - but that means both in their crates at the same time. If you have one dog loose, make sure it can't get into the room the other is crated. Dogs can, and have, successfully mated through the bars of crates. Separate rooms is a good idea

As for the diapers - as long as you allow the bitch a reasonable amount of time free of them to clean herself you shouldn't have too many problems. Do be aware that those are just a way of stopping her leaving a mess round the house. In no way at all are they an effective means of preventing dogs from mating.

Crate them in separate rooms if possible. Your male will be going crazy at the tme she's in heat, so making it easier for him would be the best solution.
