I too find that a bit odd. We have a caveat in our contract that states we highly recommend crate training for a period of at least 6 months before allowing a boxer free reign.
We would also never recommend free-feeding or demand doggy doors. In fact, I don't like the use of doggy doors if the family isn't home. They definately have their place, but to me it's a little risky with some rescues to allow unsupervised time outside, as many rescues are diggers or jumpers. After all, many did end up as strays some how.
Good luck with Gunnar and I hope you have a better experience with rescue next time around. After all, little Gunnar would adore a little sister I am sure. :D
