we have an appointment for our two year old to get spayed on monday. we bring her to the vet at 7:30 a.m. and pick her up the next morning. is it critical that someone be home with her all day after we pick her up? I'm not sure what to expect. my husband and I are trying to work out our schedules so one of us can be home at all times, but it may turn out that there is a short time where we're not there. is this a huge problem?

Spaying

Hello, You asked about leaving your boxer girl home for a little while after she gets spayed that kind of depends on her and her normal activity level. If she is usually pretty hyper girl then I suggest putting in area to confin her like a small room or a kennel. But, on the other hand if she is pretty mellow she should be ok. The biggest concern is her liking the incision site and if she should do that it will cause it to fill with blood and you will need to go back the vets. When my female got spayed we put a shirt on her and tied it so she couldn't reach the incision site and if we couldn't be there she was kenneled. The vet can also give some Ace which is sedative or you can use benadyrl which is safe to use as well the same stuff we take start with 25mg if it doesn't seem to work then one more tab should be good but no more than that. One more important thing don't let her jump up on anything. Her being older she will take a little longer to recover. I hope this helps and that it's not too much info. I use to work at vet clinic as a tech.

Just a caution about using ACE. It can kill your boxer. Stick with the benadryl to be safe, unless the vet suggests something else. you should also remind your vet not to use ACE on your boxer as the anesthetic(sp?) to put her under, during the procedure. She can go into cardiac arrest. Good luck to you!!!

Ace can be harmful for any dog not just boxers. I did use Ace on my one boxer and she is just fine. It should be something disscused between the vet and the owner and should not be used for long term. One dose at a very low amount is usually fairly safe. But I do perfer the benadryl. This was only a suggestion for this person not a do it kind of thing.

You must be careful with Benedryl as well. It can sometimes make them hyper. You just need to know what your dogs reaction to it is.

From the American Boxer Club:

There is one drug commonly used in anesthetic protocols that should not be used in the Boxer. The drug is Acepromazine, a tranquilizer, which is often used as a preanesthetic agent. In the Boxer, it tends to cause a problem called first degree heart block, a potentially serious arrhythmia of the heart. It also causes a profound hypotension (severe lowering of the blood pressure) in many Boxers that receive the drug. Recently, on the Veterinary Information Network, a computer network for practicing veterinarians, an announcement was placed in the cardiology section entitled "Acepromazine and Boxers." This described several adverse reactions to the drug in a very short time span at a veterinary teaching hospital. All the adverse reactions were in Boxers. The reactions included collapse, respiratory arrest, and profound bradycardia (slow heart rate, less than 60 beats per minute). The announcement suggested that Acepromazine should not be used in dogs of the Boxer breed because of a breed related sensitivity to the drug

So, no, I would say that given the information we know, one dose at a low amount is not safe, and should not be risked. It is not something that needs to be given as a preanesthetic, so why treat your Boxer with it post spay?

MNBoxergrl, to address your question, I would try to be there the next day if at all possible. However, if there is a window of time where she must be alone, try crating her. I'm sure she will be fine and back to her normal self before you know it (mine sure were)!

Good luck

As any medication can have side affects with any animal and can also result in death if not used correctly even anesthesia. These where merrily a suggestion not saying that was the correct path to do. I agree with what everyone is saying 100 %. As for the safest method for after care is to be there and if you can't then the kennel is the next safest step.
