Question about having two female boxers

I currently own a 15 month old female boxer and want to get another one as a companion for her. She is very active, but isn't dominant. I have heard that you shouldn't have two females, and I have also heard the opposite. I would just like some personal opinions on this type of situation. Thanks!

To me, this totally depends upon your dog. I don't think it is a question anyone else can REALLY help you out with. For my doggy pack I have two females and one male, it is working out very well for me, but I do know that if I brought home a new male dog/puppy, there would be some major fighting, as my male boxer Samson doesn't get along with other males.
I would suggest getting her around some dogs of both genders and see what you think. Good luck with everything. Cause what's better than one... two!! (or three)

I've heard of good and bad of having two females. I have two females and they are the best of friends. They have never even had a small tiff.

I have two females (three actually), and with two of the females I have to separate them at all times. We have to do "shifts" in our house. One girl out, one girl in her crate, and it is a challenge. They both attempt to be the alpha and it's a definite problem. They will tear into each other in a split second, and it's serious business.

So...if you want to risk having this situation in your home, then you can try two females. I can tell you this, though, some of the Boxerworld members do not have this problem with the females, but those that do have the problem see that it is a serious one.

I have two boxers and they are of the oppsite sex. I dont think I would ever try to have two of the same sex. I have heard to many horror stories of people that have boxers of the same sex fighting.
Are you going to be getting another puppy or will you be looking for an older boxer? I would also try and see how your girl reacts to other dogs just to see which way you should go.

Through personally experience. We where told in the beginning that it is hard to say whether the same sex will get along. Some told us that it matters with personality and not the gender. and some adamently disagreeed. They said stick with the opposite sex. Well with mixed opinions my husband and i decided to get another female. In the beginning they got along famously. They slept together, ate together even shared the same crate.

Well Bianca was maturing and one day decided to buck up and so they got into a huge fight. They are ok now after training/behaviorist and such. They do not fight however they are never left alone unattended. Because you never know.

My point. Is that they may get along NOW but like all personalities it may change. Dogs go through maturing just like us and have hormones. I feel like its playing Russian Roulette having two females. I know now that I will not ever have the same sex in one household. My husband and I are lucky that we where able to work it out and that our girls where able to still love eachother and not fight after their bitchwar. But I know some that where not so lucky. =/

And yes i know that their are some that have two females and have NEVER fought, but what i know now....I will not ever take the chance.

My advice is to get the opposite sex. And yes i know that even with the opposite sex they may fight but i feel that you have more of a chance with the same sex fighting.

I have two female boxers. Actually one is a boxer mix and I actually think that is definately a benefit. Also when we purchased Jasmine as a puppy three days later we rescued Hailey and we estimated her age to be about 13 - 16 months at the time which I believe also helped. Hailey is not a dominant dog by no means. Hailey and Jasmine had always been fed together and had slept together. To this day they are even crated together.

I have three female dogs and one male and I would never attempt to bring in another male until Alex has passed no matter what breed. I just know that would never work! Quite frankly three dogs are just right. I don't think I would ever have four again unless I had a fenced in back yard.

Why take a chance on 2 females? In my opinion it would be safer to simply get a male and then you should not have any problems.

I'd just get a male- it will be so much fun- there is such a difference between male and female boxers you should get a feel for both! Thats just me personally, I have a male now and am hoping to get a female when we have more space, not because Samson wouldnt like a male, he loves all dogs- but just because it would be fun to have one of each! We meet female boxers all the time and Samson loves playing with the girlies. I have to chaperone my bf to make sure he doesnt go out and buy one prematurely... he just cant wait!

I would get a male. My female is very dominant and pushy. She has been known to be aggressive with strange dogs. We really have to keep an eye on her. We got a male puppy (he's now 15 months old) and she adores him. But he isn't aggressive or interested in being dominant (she humps him all the time and he pretty much ignores it).

I think if we had gotten a female, we would have been in BIG trouble--and seriously it's not worth the stress of worrying about it. How sad would it be if they didn't get along??
