Question About Fencing!!!!!

I live in a small ranch-style house with neighbors all around. My back yard is about 90% fenced in by a 4' chain linked fence. My question is this... should I go ahead and finish fencing off the rest of the area or should I take it all down and put in a privacy fence? I am only 23 so I don't have a big checking account the privacy fence would require. Do you think the chain linked will be good enough or is it a matter of time before he starts jumping it? He's only 11 weeks old right now but I'm sure he'll be big enough before spring to where he can hop it. Any suggestions?

Dh and I built a deck on the back of the house with the side rails about 4' high. We even have chairs that are against the rails. Jasmine nor Hailey has ever tried to jump it. The'll get up in the chairs to curl up and fall asleep, but they've never used them jump off the deck. Granted the deck isn't near big enough for them to have a running start either. If you put quite a bit of training in so your pup won't try to jump the fence, then you may can go with the chain link fence. Good luck.

Hi Rockstar -

I'm sure he could easily jump a chain link fence once he gets a bit older. Actually, many Boxers are perfectly capable (and willing!) to jump a 6 foot privacy fence without much effort at all.

I would just suggest you supervise him when he's outside. That, and work on training

My Oscar jumps our chain link fence like it isn't even there. (I call it a*s to air) He usually only does is when the school kids are walking home from the bus stop. He'll jump over and chase them down the street wanting to play. Then I have to yell to the kids to stop running from him before Oscar will stop. I have to be out with him or watching him very closely when he is out side because he does it in a split second. Privacy fences can be VERY expensive depending on the company, type of wood, style of the fence, etc. We want to put on up but it's gonna cost us at least $3,000. Plus if you have someone pull your old fence out they can charge for that too. I would suggest for now just finishing off the rest of the fence and watch him closely when he is outside. Some fur babies never jump, some do. I would give the chain link a chance first.'

I have a chain link fence and I know that if they want to jump it they could. but I stay outside with them and have taught them from the start not to jump on the fence so they really don't bother with it. I think it takes time to teach them. but I would never totally trust them.

We have a chain link part of the yard is 5ft.& part is 6 ft. But we have never had a problem with ours jumping, they have never attempted to, I guess it depends on the dog.

I have a 6 foot privacy fence and the thought of Tae jumping it is ludicrous! I'm sure some dogs could scale a fence that high, but I have no doubt the thought has NEVER crossed her mind. She's more interested in sniffing at the gaps below the fence or digging in her sandbox! I do think it depends on the dog, though.

I really think it is all in the training because we have baby gates in my house that neigther one of my boxers has ever tried to jump. My boston terrier on the other hand can fly over them like they are hurdles. He probably would scale our 6ft privacy fence in the back yard to if I gave him the chance:

My 8mo old Lucy, scaled our 6ft wood fence to get in the front yard after my husband went out one day, he came home to find her in the front yard, she had unlocked the back door, slid it open and scaled the fence. Apparently when she wants something she is very determined. If we are with her she doesn't try anything, but if we go out the gate she's jumping at the fence.(we're working on that). I hope for your sake they are all different and it depends on the training, but we never thought she would do that. Best of luck to you!

How about a 6ft chain link? That might be a bit cheaper than a privacy fence
