I believe my Lily has a cold. At times, I can hear her congested and then at times, her nose is runny. I called the vet to get some suggestions but all they want to do is put her on Amoxacillin (sp). I do not want her to be put on medications so is there anything I can do to help her? Any suggestions is appreciated.

I would put her on the medicine. If she gets pnemonia she'll have to be on even more medicine. Also, why make her suffer when she can get better sooner. I get bronchitis every year and say that I'm not going to go to the doctor. I finally break down and get my antibiotics and feel better immediately and wish I'd done it to begin with.

You can try liquid vitimin C in her water for the next few days and if she develops a cough, you can give her human cough syrup in children's portion. Colds will usually go away on their own if the immune system gets a bit of help, but if she doesnt improve in about 2-3 weeks, I would take her back to the vet to make sure she hasn't developed something else on top of the cold. Good luck.

There is no antibiotic that will help a cold, if your baby has something else that's a different story, but without an exam how would your vet know what's going on anyway.

You've been given good advice. A cold, or most likely Kennel Cough, is a virus and antibiotics don't do anything to help that. What they do help with is to keep the dog from coming down with a secondary bacterial infection, like pneumonia.

If you're willing to risk that, the cold will just need to run it's course as there's nothing you can really do. If she's coughing, you can give Robitussin but you would need to get the dosage from your vet.

Good luck, I hope she gets to feeling better.
