Hi a friend of mine is wanting to breed her Grate Dane bitch, she is currently looking to purchase a Grate Dane dog. She has found a dog but it appears that the father of her bitch is also the father of this dog. Does this matter? How does interbreeding (if that is the correct word) work with dogs? I.e. is it bad to breed in the same blood line?

Any help here would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Matt

My understanding that is a BIG NO NO! Also if they are not AKC or CKC registered and follow the breeding quidelines she is a byb.

I would say that unless your friend is an extremely experienced and responsible breeder that she should not breed her pup at all, much less do an in-line breeding.

Breeding half-siblings is inbreeding (or an extremely close line-breeding, depending on your definition). That is something that should only ever be attempted by people who are very familiar with the line (family) of dogs they're breeding and who have intimate knowledge of any recessive genes, traits or defects the dogs are carrying. It's the sort of thing someone might do if they'd been breeding that particular line for six or seven generations. It would be highly irresponsible to jump into a breeding like that without that in-depth knowledge and experience of that particular line within the breed.

I presume these dogs have been screened already for hip dysplasia and cardiomyopathy, and had their eyes and thyroid panels done. If not, they shouldn't be bred at all. And this is exactly the sort of breeding that is the *most* likely to produce affected puppies if the parents have not been properly screened for genetic defects. Because with breeding such close relatives, you're far more likely to have hitherto hidden or unexpressed genes doubled up and defects exposed.

Thanks for all the replies it is very much appreciated.

My friend has little experience of dog breeding, she is just looking into getting a new friend for her bitch with the posibilities of breeding it over the next year or so. I probably should have explained that earlier but just had time to make a quick post, my appologies.

I've advised her not to get this dog because of the close bloodline and so she's not going to. Her bitch has had all necessary tests and is fully KC registered.

Do any of you know of good websites with information on dog breeding or any books that will be able to help her?

She loves her dog very much and is a very responsible owner so I know she will not breed unless she has all the relavent knowledge.

Once again, many thanks for your help.

Matt
