Every animal has live demodectic mites. Even humans have them in our eyelashes. But when the vet does a scraping and sees the immature forms as well as adults - that's when they want to start medicating. It's the overgrowth of natural flora that causes concern and it is usually due to a lower immunity or passed from mother to pups. My girl had a tough 3rd month (major Upper Resp.Infection) and then she got demodex as 6 mos and the vet thought it was because she had been so sick earlier. She only got one injection of ivomec and it cleared up...but it was also caught very early. I would definately get a second opinion.

Diesel today seems to be doing fine. I stopped giving him the Ivermectin last week. His stools seem to be getting harder too. He doesn't itch and hasn't for quite some time. His hair has almost all grown back but its not as soft as it was before he started this. It is also lighter in the areas where it has grown back but I think its just cause its shorter.

I read about all the people that over this with no meds and felt like I could do the same. I am also going to find a new vet to get his neutering done.

I suspect Ronin might have Demodetic Mange - have a Vet appt. this coming Monday to confirm/ease my mind about it. He has a lot of thinning hair under both ears flaps, and that "moth" eaten look in places around his neck. I have learned soo much from this post - I just wanted to thank you all! This is why I love this site ! :D
