There are exceptions to every "rule". Some people abuse their bodies by overindulging in smoking, drinking, and other bad habits that live to a ripe old age, while some who try to do everything they can to ensure good health and a long life suddeny drop dead while they are still young.

Like people, some dogs turn out the opposite of what one would normally expect from their environments. There are some who do well though life seems to have conspired against them while others seem to be "bad seeds" though they've had every advantage.

So it is with the recommended eight to nine week period for pups to remain with their littermates. These come from years of experience and studies. And, like a proper diet, exercise and lifestyle increase the odds that you will have a longer, healthier life, we can always find "exceptions".

No one has ever said that a dog taken at five weeks cannot have a great temperament or that a dog with great socialization and handling cannot be ornery.

The raising of a dog is sometimes more "art" than science. This is one of those "as a rule" things which by the term means there will be exceptions.

I think the age that the breeder lets them go varies. Duke came home at 5 weeks. He was already eating puppy food, and not wanting to feed from the mom. He is fine, and he adjusted very well. There was never a problem with him. He mostly slept a lot. But just keep your eye out. Like most boxers, Duke was very inquisitive, so just make sure that your pup's curiosity doesn't get him/ her into anything dangerous.

Welcome!
Congrats on the puppy! You are in for a treat. My Goliath was a breeze to housebreak. As was said before, take them out as much as possible, especially after eating and waking up. That seemed to be the time Goliath was most apt to relieve himself. Now he wakes me up in the middle of the night with lots of kisses wanting me to let him out..LOL!:D

I agree. Take them out OFTEN! I found though, that when Harley was sleeping in my bed, I was awakened sometimes 2x a night for him to relieve himself. When I used a crate for the nighttime, he never woke me up once. That got me out of the nightly yard walks. Good Luck. They grow so fast.

Congratulations on your new Boxer baby... You are going to love having your furbaby. I got my girls when they were 6 1/2 wks old, i agree it's young, but as long as you are careful it will be fine. My only real advice is to not take your puppy around too many dogs until the vaccinations are started. You'll see they are into everything, but loads of fun!!!!

Welcome to boxer world.... look forward to seeing pics of your baby soon!!!!!!!!

I have to agree it all depends on the breeder if the puppy is ready to go. I have a friend that has a boxer that is 5 months old and has heard her since she was 6 weeks old and she is doing just fine he has had her out to socialize with others and is not having any problems with her.
