Hey there,

Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. My husband and I had a similar dilemma and, ultimately we decided on a rescue girl.

Since we both work, we felt we did not have the time right now to potty train a puppy. I say you should rescue, definitely -- but I am biased! We were SOOO lucky to get Madeline. What we have found is that a lot of "rescues" don't have bad stories, or baggage. Madeline was simply an owner surrender because she didn't get along with their older female dog that they had had longer. She was never abused, she's perfectly well adjusted - she LOVES kids - and she's only 15 months (so she came to us potty trained).

When we get a male Boxer to add to our family, we are probably going to adopt him as well. Good luck!!

Puppy

Like everyone has said, it is a very difficult choice. In my opinion if you have the time to invest go with a puppy. Yes, Rescues need loving families also but I have been working with a friend who fosters quite often for the local rescue and it is difficult to find the right fit for a family. It is not impossible just difficult. You also get the joy of watching them grow just like you do with your children.

My baby, Dakota, is about 4 months now and has been the joy of our house. I have 2 small children and a 13 year old male mix.
We all love him and enjoy every day with him.

I am fostering a Boxer Mix so needless to say I am biased. Of course if you are interested in mine her name is Belle and right now she is 18 wks at 35 pounds has all shots and is due to be spayed in 4 wks.:rolleyes: Of course you may not want to come down to Georgia to pick her up. My female boxers best friend is her sister, a border collie/sheltie mix of some sort. Definantly a herder -- she herds Lexi So I have to agree, boxers can do well with herders.

2 of my 3 are rescues and volunteering for rescue, I had to vote for a rescue. They are not all rejects of society as many perceive. My male, Baxter, has earned his Canine Good Citizen and his Therapy Dog International Certificates and works therapy at a local hospital. The work he does with some is intense and he is absolutely a love with kids and other dogs. He is amazing to watch at work! If you choose a reputable rescue, they will ensure a proper placement of a dog with you. Best of luck!

I voted rescue, because there are way too many dogs out there who just need love and attention and want to give the same back, but have been mistreated by subhuman masters.

rescue AND new puppy

I seem to follow the pattern; one rescue girl (now 12 1/2 years old) and one puppy (12 weeks). I can tell you Bridgette my rescue girl definately came with "issues." But, knowing that in 1994 they gave her less than a 50% chance of surviving because of her condition- and knowing it is 2002 and she is still just as loveable as ever-just a little greyer and slower, I would do it again in a heartbeat. She has paid me back in devotion more than I could ever have given her. The pup Brutus is TRYING MY PATIENCE but oh well- the life we choose as Boxer lovers!

We have a rescue that has been wonderful as well. His story was that he was a "breeders" dog (byb imo) and the breeder had cancer and turned several in to rescue at the same time. Hershey and his yardmate were scared to death of the rescue workers and it took a several weeks to get close to them and get them to warm up (they would run to the back of their kennel when anyone would come near). They took them into rescue around October last year. He's been home with us since 12/31 and is nothing but a LOVE. He has his "issues" in that he's basically timid and insecure, but he is nothing short of wonderful with our kids and our other dog and well as any company that we have.

Obviously I submitted my vote for RESCUE!!

After trying for months to get another Boxer from our local rescue, I was told that they do not feel that I should own another Boxer. Not only that, but they felt the liberty to call all of the local shelters and tell them not to adopt to me, should I apply with them. edited by moderator in Minnesota is the worst organization that I have ever dealt with. I was so excited to adopt a Boxer in need, but after this stint with edited by moderator, I have given up and will not ever deal with them again. I have a feeling that edited by moderator , did not like the fact that I previously bought my puppy from a breeder that she has dealt with before. She was very (too) interested in where I got Marley from and what the breeder/kennel is. I told her and the next day, I got a short, blunt email from her comfirming that I am not rescue material for them and that they are notifying area shelters and recommending that they not adopt out to me. There is no basis to their ruling, and because if them, I cannot adopt any other dog here in Minneapolis. What gives??? Can any of you explain this behavior? edited by moderatorIf anyone can shed some light on this puzzling behavior or help me out with adopting a rescue, please help me out! Thanks!

From what I know re rescue, I would definitely go the rescue route. You may still get a puppy if thats what you want, I don't know if I cud go the puppy route again :( but would sure rescue!

BW supports rescue organizations. If you have a problem with this rescue then please take it up with them. BW is not the place to slander another organization.
