Hi,

over the weekend we started training our 9 week old pup on her new lead. She fights it the whole way and thinks it's a game which, I suppose, is natural enough. How do we encourage her to actually follow me and the lead without dragging her?

Any tips would be welcome.

Regards,

Well, you can try several things. For a start, how about just attaching the lead and letting her drag it around. Once she's used to that, you should be able to pick up the other end and follow her with no problems. And once she's happy enough with that, you can progress to encouraging her to follow you around - lots of hand clapping and enthusiastic noises, yummy treats and even some peanut butter on a spoon helf in front of her nose are all good techniques. She should get the idea fairly quickly :)

LOL - the concept of a leash must be a bit of a culture shock for a young pup.

Treats/play breaks

We have an 9 wk old puppy at home, I just am starting to leash train him. I took him outside and took little pieces of treats that I broke up and coaxed him into walking for a treat. He got the hang of it VERYFAST. I only worked with him for about 15 or 20 minutes and then took a play break and praised him for doing so good. That was friday on sunday he was good to go and ready to "go for a ride" !!!! I used the Nutro choice treats that come insticks and just broke them into bite sized pieces.

Good Luck!

Monty actually takes part of the lead in her mouth when walk. We don't mind, because it makes her feel like she is in charge, and therefore good while on the lead.

the first time we put our dog on a lead, he hated it, he was about 10 weeks old. then we just put the lead on him around the house and let him drag it around to get used to it. He is 12 weeks now and he loves going for walks. I just walk him around the block, about 5-7 min walk, but he has no problems and seems to enjoy the walks. Whenever i get the leash out now and he sees me getting it he gets excited to go for a walk.

You could try using a harness instead of a collar, that may help... Once they become used to the idea of a harness it's usually easy to switch to a lead.
