Im in the same situation as boxerbabe! I am in college right now and I currently dont have a boxer but plan to do so this summer for training n what not. Freshman year they make us all live in dorms but just like boxerbabe, im not a partier drinker ne of that stuff personally i think its all worthless... anyways the fact of the matter is if you can give him the time and place then go for it. Next year ill be in a house with 3 friends and they are all cool with my having a dog so another thing is to check with any roommates!

you also need to make sure that the apartment you are renting is ok with dogs and iwth large breed dogs as well. Many apartments who are ok with dogs of all sizes have restrictions on teh age and wont let you have a dog under the age of 6 months. You should both keep that in mind if you get a puppy. I personally am going to either rescue a young dog or see if any responsible breeders in the area have young dogs that were not good in the show ring or were returned by the original buyers or what have you. Make sure you are able to get something in writing about the pet policy and saying you can have your dog there because that is often how boxers and other dogs end up in rescues. Also if you live in an apartment you may have some troubles adopting but thats a different issue. Just thought I would bring that up. Oh and most if not all apartments charge an initial fee for dogs and a lot of them charge amonthly fee. In my area most initial fees are about $200 and monthly fees are anywhere from $20 to $50. So keep all that in mind when you look for apartments.

the insurance is def something i will look into. i also have a girlfriend who is as excited about the boxer as me and is going to be around it all the time. while this is a relationship, i do not depend on it for this reason (who knows what could happen) but i have a few close friends (one with a dog) who also will be around alot on their own accord and came to me to say theyd love to help out if i had to be gone a few days to visit home or something like that.

the apartment hunt can be troublesome but luckily ive found a place (as well as several others) that allows pets. my current lease ends this may so in my search for a new apartment im making sure it is pet friendly (dog friendly more like it - tons of places allow pets but not dogs) just in case i do decide to get a boxer.

Not so sure about Pittsburg, but here I have found a house for rent that has somewhat of a backyard. At least that way no worries about stairs to go pee or being close to neighbors if the pup barks while in the crate. Often houses are way better about being dog friendly. Something to look into but I know real estate is much more expensive in the north so, perhaps not.

My roommates are excited too, but I made sure that they know the dog will always be all MY responsibility. I am moving in may too. Good luck with your search, and yes it is really hard to rescue unless you have a fenced in yard, i've tried :( ! keep us posted!

I am a sophmore in college and have a 15 week old boxer and a 1 year old boxer/doberman mix and I wouldn't change it for the world. When I first started college I went to an University about 2 hours away and would come home to see my 12 year old boxer, Tossie, because I missed her so much (I came home to see my parents too...lol). After my first semester I decided I wanted to transfer to the local University (which is still 25 miles away). Upon moving back home and not getting along with my Dad's girlfriend because she hated Tossie so much I moved in with my fiance. We live in a small place but we fenced in the back yard which is huge so my pups have plenty of running room and we live in the country so we make frequent trips to the creek to play in the summer. We are not rich but we live comfortable and I would go without for my dogs to have what they need. I have insurance which will help if ever need be. I am not a partier either and would rather spend time at home with my "family" than do anything else. I think that if you are ready as far as financially and maturity then there is no reason that you couldn't have a dog. Just keep in mind that the expenses can and do add up very quickly and the "kids" need plenty of love which is so easy to give to the sweet little things. Good luck on your decision.

yeah definently check out VPI insurance it is one of the only ones that offers routine care, i believe it is www.petinsurance.com . Some of the others might offer routine care but if you do a quick google for pet insurance web site with plenty of info will come up. I like vpi cause you file the claims yourself so you can go to any vet you want. Good luck!

Well I think as long as your ready it would be great. I wanted to tell you a story that I think will be helpful. On the 23rd of december I bought my GF a white boxer from a byb"back yard breeder"not knowing all the risks. On christmas day at 4:00am I was in the only dog hospital open in miami due to the fact that the puppy was so sick it passed out. I was there for 3hrs and he got a I.V and a couple of shots that ran me $500 alone. So what I am trying to tell you is that more power to you if you want a boxer because in my opinion they are the best breed but make sure that you are financially stable and that you choose a reputable breeeder dont just go to any breeder and for god sake dont go to a puppy store for they are in it for the money instead of the love.

Thanks Javi!

I have read so many horror stories about BYB and puppy stores so I've been hunting down breeders. This was the first site I found on boxers when I first started researching so my first impression on where to get a Boxer was either from a rescue or a reputable breeder. This site is great :D and I'm jealous of everyone's boxers
