This is my second night with my new 8 week puppy and we just realized that, at night, when we take him out to relieve himself, he starts trembling because it's cold, so he only cuddles on our feet and doesn't do anything. After half an hour of innactivity, we take him inside, and that's when he decides to go potty.
Mind you, we're in California and it's not really that cold, maybe around the low 60's. Still, we're afraid that he might get sick and that's when we let him go indoors again, but he has done the same trick twice tonight.
Any advice for tomorrow night? If we let him go on a newspaper inside, will he think it's OK to go potty inside? He'll be leashed train in two weeks (hopefully) and then we'll take him for a short walk every night, but so far, the backyard patio is the only choice.

Get him a sweater or coat, they really can't hold a lot of body heat,he's a baby, even when he's grown they can't tolerate extreme hot or cold temps. & they aren't fond of rain either. Hanley

Walmart has the cutest sweaters for small dogs for only $4.00!! I just wish they had them in Thumper's size ~ Cathy

He probably won't get sick if all you do outside is potty, maybe don't wait half an hour, maybe 10 minutes, back inside for a few minutes, then back outside until he goes...maybe?

we got our 7 week old in the middle of february, and we're in minnesota, it was BITTER cold those first few weeks, and maybe we were just lucky, cuz we'd take him out, he'd go right away, and then come sit on our feet and tremble, that's how we knew he was done! our trips outside weren't usually more than a minute or two. i wonder if because he was paper trained that it was easier, he knew he couldn't go on teh carpet or floor, he had to go somewhere else and since we weren't providing the paper, it must be outside?

so anyway, what i wanted to say was that 60 is nothing compared to 15 and our puppy was ok...:)

we live in Maryland and got lucy in March and it was cold and rainy. That girl would sit and shiver outside and never go. I stood out there one time for an hour and she still didnt go. Took her inside and she went on the kitchen floor. Unfortunatly with lucy we went through that for a while but she is now 9 months old and will go outside in the cold and rain woo woo.. cant wait to see what happens in the snow LOL. It will get better.

When we got Titus (which was in autumn) he did the exact same thing. He would shiver and shake and then jump up and throw his little body at my leg, begging to be picked up and cuddled. What we did was kept him moving. If I just stood there, then he would gladly sit down, between my feet, and nothing got accomplished. I'd constantly walk him back and forth, saying "Go pee" "Go pee" until he did. Then, it was time to celebrate :) He picked up on it very quickly. Let us know how you get on.
