I was just wondering if bringing a new puppy into the home will cause him not to drink any wwater. it has only been at least 18 hours since he had anything to drink. I took him outside to run around to try and get him to drink and put him down by the water bowl and nothing. he stuck his nose in there and got it wet and that was it. he is going to be 9 week tomorrow. he has peed 2 times and took a pooonce since he has been in the house. and all were outside. any help or sugsetions would be great.

Maybe put it in a smaller bowl or put some in your hand and let him get a taste of it?? I don't know just a thought!

Tae gets weird about water occasionally when I handwash the bowl, rather than putting it in the dishwasher. Is their any chance you washed the bowl and there's detergent residue in it? I know that sounds strange, but it's just about the only thing Tae is peculiar about.

My roomates girlfriend had to hand feed him last ngiht to get him to eat. I have thought about the water in the food. im gonna have to try something if he hasnt had anything to drink when i get home. By the way he is real clumsy. when we were outside before i took him to run out around the house and he ran around the corner and saw to big stones and tried to jump them i guess and did a sumbersault it was so cute. i had to run back and see if he was ok and he is still fine. he also hasn't made any barks or anything no welps nothing he just breaths heavy when he is nervous. But he is so cute.

When I got Markus, he never seemed to drink either. So I added water to his food.

18 hours is a long time for an 8 week old puppy not to take any fluids. At that age they can dehydrate very quickly, which can be a serious matter and possibly fatal. I'm not trying to scare you unneccessarily, but it IS something you should be concerned about and watching carefully. The heavy breathing sounds a little odd to me too.

I'd try adding a little milk to his water bowl to see if he'll drink something then. Canned food is another thing you could try - its 90% water and if you can get him to eat some of that, then at least he's getting some fluids into his system. If he still hasn't drunk anything by this time tomorrow or looks in any way distressed, I'd get him along to a vet promptly. Good luck :)

When I got Britnee she didn't drink out of the water bowl either. SO ,I talked to my breeder and she told me to go to the store & buy a bulb syringe (the things they use in the hosiptal to clear stuff outta the baby's airway). Fill it up with water and drip it by her mouth. It worked like a charm and eventually she started drinking out of her water dish.

If this doesn't not work like what was previously said Call the vet!

You can also try using a spray bottle to spray some water in his mouth.

When Holly first came home, she was drinking water, but I had to show her where her new water bowl was. I wriggled my fingers in the water to get her attention; that seemed to draw her over to it.
