Food

Caspersmom, we have always used Pedigree small crunchy bites for our boxers and they love it. We mix it with three tablespoons of canned food (for an adult). Our boxers have always been very healthy with great coats and this dog food is priced reasonably, unlike some of the others touted by vets, etc. I tried some of those higher priced foods thinking I was doing the right thing and they never finished it. When I returned to the Pedigree, their appetites returned with great vigor! Pedigree is recommended by top breeders and I know many who use it. You do not have to pay a lot to get a lot out of a dog food.

Pedigree has a lot of grain fillers in it - here's an ingredient listing from their website - note that the first ingredient is ground corn:

Ground Corn, Meat and Bone Meal, Ground Wheat, Wheat Mill Run, Animal Fat(preserved with BHA/BHT), Natural Poultry Flavor, Corn Gluten Meal, Salt, Potasium Chloride, Sunflower Oil (source of Linoleic Acid), Vitamins( Choline Chloride, dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate [source of Vitamin E], L-Asocorbyl-2-Polyphosphate [Source of Vitamin C], Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate[Vitamin B1], Riboflavin Supplement [Vitamin B2], Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Caramel, Trace Minerals (Zinc Sulfate, Potasium Iodide, Copper Sulfate).

The ONLY protein source is generic meat and bone meal - and the rest is essentially filler. With boxers, and their predisposition to cancers, it's also a good idea to stay away from BHA and BHT preservatives as they're known carcinogens. smashicon

If you visit the Whole Dog Journal's website, you can get a definition of each of these ingredients (like "wheat mill run") and see why they're not really recommended as a dietary staple for dogs.

If your dogs do well on it, that's great. But there's also the chance they could do better on something with more wholesome nutrition. ;)

The biggest problem with dog foods that contain bone meal, is one has absolutely NO idea as to what that actually is!
Even the word "Meat" could be deemed suspect as no clear information is given as to what type of meat and from what place it was sourced.

I suggest those who feed solely kibble should visit some of the sites regarding "Pet Food Manufacture" and see what may or may not be going into Bone Meal!
If a package of dog food has a very detailed list of ingredients and "Bone Meal" in all its unknown quantities is explained, then I would say this is a reasonable food to feed an animal.
If a company states all ingredients, and then can be proven to by lying, they can be sued. Although i'm not sure how the average pet owner would go about this? Perhaps some may have access to a laboratory??
If the food is not clearly labelled and defined, no matter how cheap or expensive, I sure wouldnt feed it to my dogs!
The fact that many pets are dying from cancers these days must surely be testimony to something not right in their environment.
My first line of attack would be to make sure an animal has the very best diet available, so he has the chance to build and maintain a top performing immune system.
This gives anyone , human or animal , the best chance in life.

It has been noted , to the horror of the watching world, that the feeding of inapropriate Bone Meal caused the world wide spread of "Mad Cow"

Food for Thought?

update

We have started to switch Casper over to Canidae - I mixed a little in with his Innova last night and this morning. He seems to really enjoy it - really licked his bowl clean :) Thank you everyone for your help..

I am in the process of switching Harley from ProPlan to Canidae. The fact is, he likes it sooooo much he has been vomiting from eatting too fast.(I figure that's what it is from.) I am finding that I have to feed him smaller amounts 4x a day, instead of 3. May I ask the amount others 9 week pups may be eatting at any given meal?
