Hi, I just noticed that my baby has fleas. I only noticed it today and found about 10 crawling under his short coat. I bought him a flea collar and gave him a flea bath about an hour ago. Is there anything else I should be doing if that doesn't work? Thanks in advance.

Definitely get rid of the flea collar and skip the flea baths both are dangerous IMO. A bath in Dawn dishsoap should be sufficient and pick up some topical stuff such as Frontline Plus or Advantage, Revolution, etc to put on and that should fix the issue. I know Frontline Plus is safe for dogs as young as 8 weeks you will have to check on the other products available. Make sure they are good vet products such as the above and not the knock offs such as Bio Spot, etc.

I agree with the above, get that flea collar off of him ASAP. A monthly preventative like Frontline, Advantage or even Sentinel would be much better than that (don't opt for the cheap topical stuff that is sold just about everywhere, that's just as bad if not worse than the flea collar -- go for a name brand that your vet recommends). Or you can try a more holistic approach, such as daily garlic supplements or topical sprays containing non-toxic essential oils.

I tossed the collar!

Thankyou both for your advice! I had no idea that Flea collars were dangerous....I'll toss it, and get Frontline. I hope it's available here in Canada. The vet should have it.

I appreciate your help.

If not you can get it online. Entirelypets, Vet Depot both good sites to get it on that are legit.

All the previous posts are correct, but you also need to wash any bedding and vacuum your house and throw out the bag, (or contents of a bagless vacuum). Chances are the fleas didn't stay just on your dog. Good luck! Fleas can become a huge problem if you don't act quickly.

You can also throw a flea collar in your vacuum bag or canister and it'll kill any fleas that are inside the vacuum. And washing bedding in HOT soapy water should get rid of them in the bedding.

Depending on how bad they are in your home you may or may not end up needing to bug bomb your house.

Good luck!

We use Frontline plus on our dogs but its important that you should not shampoo/bathe the dogs 3 days before or three days after the application...If you decide to use it or one of the topicals wait 3 days from the time you gave the bath/dip and then apply...it will kill any live ticks or flees in 24 hours that are still on the dog...good luck!!

Flea update:

I gave Miles a good soak and lathered him up with Dawn Dishsoap and never seen another flea. He actually enjoyed the bath...used the kitchen sink. I wish I knew where he picked up those bugs! Anyway thanks for your advice, he's now flea free!

My 5 month puppy was losing hair along his back and his skin was turning pink and inflamed (he's a white boxer). Took him to the vet Friday and he was diagnosed with a flea allergy, so just a couple of fleas on him can wreak havoc on his system. I felt terrible, he's been on Advantix but we live in SC and the fleas are terrible this time of year and can become resistant to various flea products. We have sprayed our yard and home to no avail. Vet prescribed Comfortis and a cortizone shot and I can really see a huge difference in just a couple of days, no more fleas and his skin is looking so much better already. Good luck with your flea problem, hopefully you will be able to keep them off of your baby!
