My buddy Dexter is 8 1/2 weeks old, and we just took him home a week ago. He has diarrhea and has had for 3 days. We took him to the vet a couple of days ago for first shots, exam, etc., and the doc said he looked good and that the diarrhea was maybe food related (no worms or parasites were found). We currently feed him Pedigree Puppy with Lamb kibble mixed with a little bit of Eukanuba Puppy Growth Formula Dog Food and a little water. This is a change from his previous diet (I think the breeder said he was feeding him Puppy Chow with a little soft food and water). Anyone had a puppy with diarrhea for this long? If so, what was the problem, and what was the solution? Food suggestions? Thanks for the input...Bunkie

Hi Bunkie,
My guess would be that it is the sudden change in the diet. Whenever I have changed foods for my two, I have done it gradually, mixing the old with the new, and gradually over time increasing the new. When I got Kailee she was eating Purina Dog Chow, I gradually over a one week period switched her to a lamb and rice formula, with very little problems. Make sure that he is still drinking well, and if there is no change in the next day or so, then I would suggest taking him back to the vet.

Maggie had trouble adjusting to food changes too. She had diahrria for about a week once, but that was due to rawhide chews she was eating. If she has too many treats in a day she has diahrria (I can NEVER spell that word) for a day afterwards. But I notice that as she gets older, she's having less trouble with changes in her diet, gets wet stools less often, regardless of treats and whatever toys she's digested :)

I notice that she'll have very loose stools if I even change the type of treats I give her. Others may have other experiences, but that's mine. I have a friend who's had a similar problem with his puppy (non boxer) and has been having problems for about a month.

Food allergies are always a consideration as well. I notice Maggie doesn't do well with any sort of Liver product. Gives her bad diahrria. But she does well with chicken or lamb.

I feed her Nutro Max Puppy formula. I switched her a couple of times before we settled on this and now she does very well (and she likes it).

Good luck. Go back to the vet if it doesn't improve in a few more days or if she's exhibiting any other signs of illness such as not eating or drinking or drinking excessively (much more than normal), lethargy, etc.

My personal opinion is that puppies must have very sensitive tummies and until they mature some and get accustomed to food that hasn't come "pre-digested" from its mother, they are gonna have some tummy problems. After all if you think about it, it was only a matter of WEEKS before you got the pup that he was weaned from its mother's milk.

Dogs of all ages have a difficult time with sudden change in the food they eat, for that matter even changes in the water they drink. If possible start mixing Dog Chow with his food. Can I ask, why are you mixing Pedigree and Eukanuba?

Something you should watch for is your pup becoming dehydrated. If the diarrhea continues it could lead to serious problems.
Good luck,

I agree with the change of food so sudden and YES why are you feeding 2 diff. kinds of food AND water? We had this problem with my 1st. She got it from the lamb mixture. We had to actually cook her hamburger and rice for 1 wk. It cured her and then kept her off the lamb formula. You might want to try that.

Good luck.

Our rottie, Tommy, has a 'sensitive tummy' and at the moment we're cooking chicken and rice for him. Perhaps you should stick to one brand of puppy food rather than mixing.

My vet suggest me to put a little bit of cooked rice or just the water of cooked rice mix with the food for my cat when she had diarrhea. Maybe you can try that...
