Hi...
We brought our Truman home just over a week ago at 8 weeks. after being home for 6 days he developed very watery diarrhea. The next day was his already scheduled vet appointment for shots, so the vet told us to fast him for 24 hours, and that we were likely overfeeding him. (and postponed the shots, obviously) So, after fasting and restarting with the same food (same food all along from the breeder) his stools were back to normal, literally the next day. This morning they were very soft, and turning runny again. I am not sure what to do... my girlfriend at work said her puppy had gairdia, but I am not sure with the back and forth like we have had if that is an issue? Puppy seems fine, plays fine, naps a lot. typical puppy I think... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Stress and intestinal parasites can definitely cause diarrhea. Did the vet run any diagnostics while your puppy was there? Any blood work, a fecal or a parvo test? Its good your puppy isn't acting sick, but little ones can get dehydrated fast from diarrhea. I would contact your vet again.

no, vet didn't run any tests. It's odd because it will be runny one time and solid the next 10 times... I don't know what to think.

That worries me that she didn't run any labs! I would get him checked out. He could get really sick and fast. He could have any range of intestinal parasites, but you want to rule out anything potentially more serious! I know with giardia they can have diarrhea, but with diarrhea it can be a number of things. Good luck I hope your pup feels better soon!

the vet appt was on thursday. we fasted him then started him back up with the same food again. Everything is normal again.... the vet was thinking that it was his first week home and he was a bit overwhelmed. Should I still be worried even tho he isn't having diarrhea?

Hmm it could just be that he is in a new place and has a little bit of an upset tummy from the change. However with a puppy I always worry with diarrhea :( even if he isn't acting sick! I know anytime a puppy comes in to our vet with diarrhea we do a parvo test & fecal even if he isn't acting sick. If that is normal we will run a CBC/profile. Maybe your vet knows something I don't!? However if you are worried and he is still having diarrhea I would at least call the vet and see if they recommend you bring him back in to look at again or to run some diagnostics.
