Hi,

My new 9 week old boxer pup starts coughing and hacking after playing outside for a bit. It’s like he’s trying to get something out of his throat but nothing comes out. He really doesn’t have to be out there long at all for it to start. We haven’t been keeping him out there anyway b/c he doesn’t have all his shots yet and is not on heartworm meds yet. So we go out to make then he runs around a bit and starts the coughing. I’ll take him in, drink some water and relax him and he’ll do it for about 5 more minutes then it stops. This only happens when he’s outside. I know there’s a lot of pollen and stuff floating around the air and grass clippings, could this stuff be bothering him? Has anyone else experienced this? He just got his 2nd set of shots and he’s due for his 3rd in 3 weeks… thanks for your help.

just curious are you planning on keeping your pup outdoors permanetly once he has all his shots?.... sounds like he could be getting too hot... or maybe he has an allergy... you should probably mention this to your vet...

This may not help except to let you know that you are not alone. Sugar coughs and hacks when she has been running around outside, too. Scares me silly. I try to calm her down when I think she has been playing too hard, and always make sure I have water handy. They do have shorter noses... and so are more prone to heat and cold issues. I am in Canada and so have the whole range of temperatures. What area are you in, and is the climate extra dry or humid? Also boxers can have allergy issues... Definitely ask your vet!

It could be caused by many things. Coughing can be an indication of heart problems. I would take your puppy to the vet and have him thoroughly checked out. It is probably nothing, but better safe than sorry.

Hi,
When he got his shots they listened to his heart and it was fine. I'm on Long Island, we had a few hot days here so maybe that was it. Though he really wasn't out for long, 5 minutes maybe but I guess that is all it can take. He was just running outside for about 10 minutes and no coughing, it's much cooler here today. I will mention this to the vet next time we go (in 2 weeks) if it gets worse though of course I'll take him in sooner. Thanks!
