We've had Jetta for 3 weeks now and although she seems very active and healthy she has had 2 seisures and has been diagnosed as having a Grade 2 - 3 heart murmur on the day of one of the two seizures(last week). The facts are she was vaccinated at 7 1/2 weeks. I currently feed her natural diet; ground chicken ribs (chicken breast once the meat is removed), oatmeal with kelp and nutritional yeast, veggies (pumpkin or yams – orange, romaine lettuce, spinach, broccoli – green). I have been feeding her around 10 % of her body weight a day. As I look back I have been perhaps feeding over the 60 % RMB, but it has been pretty close. I am feeding her three times a day. I also supplement with 500 mg of Vitamin C a day. Every once and while I will give her a little bit of yogurt. She is not fat; she is high energy puppy, that is quite normal other than the seizures.

I have spoken with a breeder that suggested the following; " 50% of the diet should be your raw meaty bones and the other 50% should be your muscle meats of which 10 to 15% should be organ meats. I also give them whipping cream, yogurt, or kefir. I very rarely feed any veggies. If I did, for a 9 week old puppy it would probably be 1/2 a teaspoon only a time or two a week.
Looking at what you're feeding - get rid of the oatmeal, kelp, nutritional yeast and the veggies. I see no muscle meats or organ meats. For the time being I would stop the Vitamin C but add CoQ 10 which is a heart strengthener as is Hawthorne Berry.

First meal in the morning is all muscle and organ meats, brunch is 1/2 muscle meat (no organ meats) and 1/2 raw meaty bones which are ground chicken necks) the mid-afternoon meal is 1/2 muscle meat and 1/2 raw meaty bones and their last meal of the day is all raw meaty bones. I boil water in a teapot to pour over the meats just enough so they are body temperature. It makes them want to pee more but I also know they are not getting dehydrated.

The reasoning behind getting rid of all the supplements and veggies is that you don't know what may be contributing to the seizures besides the oatmeal and the yogurt. The eggs and organ meats will take care of the majority of the supplements. I never feed any brewers or nutritional yeast as I've found it causes itchy skin. I do use TwinLabs SuperB Complex. It's a liquid which I then transfer to a smaller dropper bottle and I can then put either a 1/2 or full dropper in the food. Eggs are good for the B's as are the organ meats. Of course the B's are your calming vitamins. I use either sodium ascorbate or Ester - C and they are both powders so it's easier to give smaller amounts to puppies if I give it. I very seldom use kelp anymore - it's like a once in a while thing if I think about it. Instead of veggies I'll also sprinkle dried herbs over their food. Rosemary, sage, thyme, Herbs de Provence, parsley, dill, fennel, the culinary type herbs. It's a whole lot easier than mushing veggies. I'll also open up a can of pumpkin or mashed sweet potatoes and mix into their muscle meats - but I'm talking about 15 pounds of meat or so to a can of pumpkin or sweet potatoes."

My questions that I asked to another breeder is what is causing this and her suggestion was it is the vaccines. This same response came from several other breeders from another list.

What do you think?
How would you change these diets?
What would your diagnosis be?
Will she grow out of this? I had the answer of 1-2 months.
Do you think it has anything to do with diet; perhaps an alergy?

We have a health guarrantee. The breeder is a reputable breeder.

Although there has been a train of thought relating food allergies to seizure activity, I would tend to agree with your breeder - that it is due to the vaccinations. Our Mya developed a seizure disorder soon after she was vaccinated. Hence, following her neurologist's advice, we never got her vaccinated again ~ Cathy

vaccinations

I have recently been given some info about how harmful vaccines can be. Especially when the vet does the combo on puppies (I think it's DHLPP). It makes sense when you think about it. Thus, we have decided not to do any more on our two except for the rabies because we have to.
I find it really ironic that a few days after we made this decision, there was a big scare story on our local news about a distemper outbreak. They were warning everyone to make sure that all of the shots are up to date. I have to admit that it did make me pause for a moment.

Jetta is doing well. She has not had a seizures since Nov 28. We have not taken her back for a check-up yet but we will soon. I truely believe that her heart murmur will be of no concern at the next check-up.

I have since learned that many boxer breeders are re-vamp there vaccine routine.

Parvo vaccine at 8 weeks (before they leave)
distemper at 12 weeks
parvo at 16 weeks and
distemper at 20 weeks
then rabies between 7-9 months
a rabies booster 1 year after the first vaccination then every three years.
nothing else.
