MY puppy Harley broke his leg and had surgery today. I hope to be able to pick him up tomorrow. Vet says he has to stay off it for 4 weeks. He has to stay in his crate. That is going to be so hard for him because he his so playful. Does anyone have any advice for me. Please say a pray for him.

Thanks
Darla

OH the poor baby! How did he break his leg? <<<<Healing Vibes>>>> for your baby! Go get a kong and some filler for it, or some recreational bones (like soup bones from the grocery store), greenies & anything to keep him busy! I had a foster boy with a broken pelvis and he was with me for 4 months, that whole time he was on crate rest. It was hard especially since he is a puppy but you have to keep him busy.

I hope I helped you some, just make sure you keep him interested in something or he will get bored and drive you CRAZY!

Good Luck,

Jaimie

Not sure if your vet will issue you with a detailed after op care sheet?
The most common problem with casts on legs is moisture.
Even a tiny drop of moisture can cause the foot to rot so make sure his leg is well wrapped in a plastic bag each time he needs to go outside.
No stairs, no jumping etc.
When you get him outof the crate, snap a short lead on him immediately, as most pups will want to try to bolt.
Probably best to gently carry him and place him on the ground for a few weeks.
Luckily hes still small! :D

Crate rest is 100% vital to the fracture healing correctly.
I had a puppy similar age and she was crated for the better part of a year while her leg and tendons were healing.
I had a trolley crate and wheeled her everywhere I was.
She even went for a "walks" in her trolley round the park!!!
We all survived it ....just!
My advice is lots of toys , raw meaty bones, lots of attention, some out of crate cuddling but NO play!
Also keep him crated in the hub of activity so he sees everything.
His leg will heal quickly if its rested and soon he will be back to gentle play then onto normal activities.

Poor Harley!

My Sam broke his leg when he was 8 weeks old, so I know how hard it is. He didn't have surgery on his though. It will be a hard road, but don't worry about it too much. Sounds like the hardest part will be keeping him crated and quiet.

Be sure to give Harley some kisses from Robyn & Samlovicon

Harley is doing better

I am having a really hard time with him in the crate. its only been 3 days and I am going nuts. He wants out so bad he digs and scraches and cries. But when I take him out he dosen't want he to hold him he wants to run and play. He think his leg is better.
they came me tranquilizer for him but I hate using them. I put lots of toys, bones and treats in the crate with him. I sometimes think he is going to hurt his leg because he is playing so hard with is toys in the crate. Should I take the toys out. The vet says its ok but I think he is playing to hard. I dont want him to have aother surgery. Can anyone help me.
Thanks Darla

Poor Harley and poor you! I imagine that it is very tough.

Did you try raw meaty bones. They would keep him quite busy for a while. You could also try stuffed Kongs and if you froze them they would keep him busy for an even longer time. You could even feed him his meals in a number of kongs so that he has to work for his meals. You could also put his kibble in treat balls or Buster cubes. Both of which can be use to dispense treats or kibble. You could just keep refilling them until he has had his quota.

What kind of tranquilizer did the vet give you? I just want to make sure that it's not Acepromazine. It can be deadly to boxers and some vets still don't know that! :(-

Hang in there!

Acepromazine And Boxers
The reactions included collapse, respiratory arrest, and profound bradycardia (slow heart rate, less than 60 beats per minute). The announcement suggested that Acepromazine should not be used in dogs of the Boxer breed because of a breed related sensitivity to the drug.

This drug is the most commonly prescribed tranquilizer in veterinary medicine. It is also used orally and is prescribed for owners who want to tranquilize their dogs for air or car travel. I would strongly recommend that Boxer owners avoid the use of this drug, especially when the dog will be unattended and/or unable to receive emergency medical care if it is needed.
you do NOT want your Dog treated with this drug Say No to it hes your beloved pet and Cant speak for himself.

My heart really goes out to you and Harley! Munson broke his toe when he was five months old and it was very difficult to keep him still while it healed. I felt guilty all of the time. Try to remember that you know what is best and that crating him is for the best. Bring the crate out in the living room with you and lay on the floor next to it while you watch TV. The suggestions with the kong are great too. At 12 weeks old he is still really little. What about a car ride in the crate as this will stimulate him some, but he is still not active. I really do feel for you. Best of luck.

Also, don't use the ace - just search around and you will find lots of info on it on the site. Call you vet and get something else if you need to.
