Hi all... I've been all over the internet on this subject, and I'm more confused than when I started. When we first got our Lucy, I researched poisonous plants and got rid of them all from the house and yard. I looked at numerous poison plant lists and none of them listed peonies... we have three of them in the yard. Lucy's never shown any interest in them until today (possibly because they're about to bloom?) She was outside for about 15 minutes. I looked out the window to check on her and saw pink petals all over the yard. She sheared one small peony off at the ground, but all of the stems were still laying there. I don't know IF she ate any and/or how much she might have eaten. I got on the computer right away and did a specific internet search on peony-poison, and came up with a dozen lists that DO show it as a poisonous plant... although none ranked them by severity. (If they ARE "poisonous", why don't they show up on all lists?) Does anyone out there know anything about the subject? She did this about two hours ago and seems absolutely fine...appetite is great, playing normally, etc. Our vet is closed (of course), and we simply can't afford an emergency vet run if there's nothing to worry about. (Don't get me wrong; I love her almost more than my own kids!) Are there any trouble signs I should be looking for? Any info? Thanks SO much for anything you can do to ease my sick tummy....

Some Symptoms the Vet told me About

My Roo is 1yr. old and likes to be nosey, its her nickname. She once ate one my household plants, which I'm sure was no good for her, and I mean all of it. I'm a nurse and got home late, my husband was asleep. Anyway, she was drooling quite a bit and vomiting, but not severly. My vet said that a dog's instinct during a belly ache is to vomit, so that's one sign. Should she not maintain an appetite would be reason for concern. Although Roo was ill she was still attempting to eat and drink, which the vet said was a good sign. I stayed with her just to make sure other things were "normal", actually until her drooling subsided and she fell asleep. In the A.M. all was well, but I put a call to the vet just to be sure! If she maintains her alertness and energy level then things should be O.K. However, most emergency vets will accept phone calls and give advice and leave it up to you whether or not you choose to pay them a visit. Hope all goes well!

Peonies are not listed in my veterinary toxicology book. I'd just keep an eye on her for vomiting or abnormal behavior. (((Lucy)))

Thank you all SO much.... I'm feeling much better now, and I guess Lucy is too. She's napping at the moment and hasn't shown any signs of anything being wrong. Sorry for the panic -- but after rushing a cat to the emergency vet after she ate some of my mother's azalea blossoms, I'm a bit gun shy. :)

What IS it about these dogs that makes us love them so much when we have to put toddler locks on the cupboards, put up with sock snatching, jackhammering, occasional counter-cruising, and snores in the middle of the night?? One look from those big brown eyes does the trick every time. :) Thanks.
