For home nail trimming, a trainer suggested to cut one nail every other day, followed by a yummy treat. If you just make it a part of your routine, all the nails get trimmed once every two months, with no major drama at any one time.

Oh boy, glad to know its not just my girl. My daughter has to rapid-fire treats into her mouth, while I sit beside her trimming Lily's front nails. The back nails are a whole 'nother position of attack. She faces my daughter sitting on the couch and I straddle Lily backwards and lift her feet like horses hoofs. Snip-snip-snip as quick as I can.

I am hoping she gets used to this and can slow down a little on the treats. She's getting pudgy and a pack of liver treats can go at one trimming.

Of course as I sit down with a huff and wipe my brow of sweat, my daughter is catching her breath and wiping the spit off her hands.........I breathily say to her, "gosh, that wasn't that bad". LOL

If looks could kill, my daughter would have had me dead a year ago! LOL

Mickey

When Mickey was young I clipped his quick so many times that he really goes nuts AFTER I'm done now! I am so careful and his quicks are so long, that I'm not even sure I'm clipping anything, but he just jumps up and down and puts his big old mouth on me and you'd think he was bleeding to death! I've actually gotten better but you wouldn't know it from the way he behaves. Bella's nails are mostly white so she's a piece of cake, and I haven't clipped her too close yet so we're good. I still just HATE to clip their nails; it's one of those necessary evils!

What an ordeal for you (and the vet) and of course, your little queen!! Maggie is not happy at the vet - but it is not quite so bad. As far as nail clipping - she doesn't seem to need it very often - it seems that walking on the sidewalks keeps them shorter.

Your story is so cute!! You really feel like you are there when you read it!!!

I always hated trimming nails too!!!

I use a "Pedicure" on Bella and Simon and it works wonderfully! Every 2-3 weeks we have our "manicure" and because it really doesn't hurt, and she gets wonderful treats afterwards, she has come to the point where she jumps right up on the couch and puts her paw across my lap when she sees me get it out.

I introduced it to my dogs slowly.

First I brought it out and turned it on and let it run and gave them treats while they sniffed it. I did Simon first, he is a German Short Haired Pointer and has pure black nails, very long because, like mentioned above, I couldn't see the quick to safely clip them. Simon was 11 and pretty mellow, so he let me work on him without too much grief and Bella watched and had her nose right in the middle of the work!!!

When Simon was done she let me do her, she was wiggly and kept pulling her paw away at first, but I stayed calm and spoke in my best "Mommy Soothing" voice and she relaxed a bit. It took several sessions, but now she is very cooperative!

Thank goodness for big brother, it really helped, Bella was still very young and she has accepted it as one of our rituals now!!!

I really like the tool because you really cannot hurt your pet's quick like you can with clippers. I threw the clippers out.
