When I take Gizmo for a walk, it is almost like he is walking me. I have tried the Gentle Leader, but he hates it. He seems to do better if I wrap he leash around my arm it make the leash smaller, but it sounds like he is choking. I am using just a regular flat buckle collar. Does this sound normal to all of you? I thought about buying a short leash. I am just not sure what to do.

Yep, I know what you're talking about with the choking thing.

How did you introduce the Gentle Leader to your dog? Mine... doesn't *like* it, per se. I mean, he'd certainly rather not have it on, but he mostly tolerates it, though he does go into occasional fits where he puts his front paws on it and lets everyone know that he wants it off. But if I have the lead on his collar and he's pulling, he goes into the choking fits.

You might want to look at the thread stapled to the top of the forum about introducing the Gentle Leader to your pup. I always made my dog sit and let me put it on, and then gave him a treat once it was on. Like I said, he'd much rather not have it on, but he'll sit and let me put it on, and he'll walk with it.

You might try re-introducing the gentle leader with a new approach, or you might try the gentle leader harness, which I know many here have had good luck with.

There are also methods people here have used with simply the flat buckle collar, using a clicker and treats, and a method where you either stop or change directions whenever the dog is pulling. Those are worth researching further, though I know I had problems trying that simply from the.... I look crazy walking around the neighborhood changing directions every two steps, and just standing still in the middle of the road with a dog choking himself on the leash hahaha.

Good luck!

well mind u - i am no dog wisperer .... BUT my boy is a rescure ( 1 1/2 years in a kennel ) so when we go him it was a 63 lb puppy with no manners !! in 4 days i tought him to walk on aleash ( nicely ) if no distractions ( still working on some of those :) ) i use a gentle "no pull harness " about 20 at any pet store, its basicaly puts pressure on his chest not neck when he pulls - even works well OVER his coat ... he is learning fast - heals well ..( LOTS OF YUMMY TREATS ON WALKS) . but when that ONE pesky squarel (sp) that his mamma feeds , teases him . this lead keeps him in controle - my shoulders inline - and his neck safe - would NEVER walk my dogs on anything but a harness ( no pull ) he has even tried to backout of it - kinda worked , but got cought up on his front legs ,and he sat on command .... so not sure if he could have. just a FYI. i also have his coller on him with tags - so we have back up if he did back out . ( i had left him out side at the local store - and guess he deceided i was gone to long - lol )

BUT YOU WILL have to find what works best for UR baby !!

good luck ~

harness

our boy was a pulling monster up until we tried the easy walk harness 1 week ago.

We've walked him every day and he no longer pulls. Every time he tries to pull it kind of twists him sideways and so he learned not to. Every day before walking I walk around the house with him and have him on my left, slightly behind me to teach him "heel" - I think he's finally understanding not to rush ahead.

If he does get a little ahead of me on walks i say "wait" and he looks back, slows down and then I say "ok walk" and we keep going.

Just being consistent for a week has made a huge difference - we aren't perfect yet nor do I thikn we will be for awhile but it has helped tremendously and now I don't have to worry about Rocky gagging himself.

The easy walk harness buckles in the front - and we hook his leash to his regular buckle collar AND to the harness - not sure if that makes a difference or not but like I said - it has done good for us so far!

The gentle leader, whether it be the one over the nose, or the harness, is just wonderful. I have tried both and am currently using the harness.

It is so wonderful to have her not pull!

I use the Gentle leader harness for Daizy and will never use anything else. She loves it as much as I do and she even knows how to lift her feet to get into it.

I bought Tyson the easy walk harness on Sunday. What a big difference. I really enjoy our walk now. He is doing great with it. I put it on him in the morning and it stays on him until he goes to bed. Well worth it.

I was wondering this as well. I was looking at getting one for Preston (8 months, 45-50 lbs) but the M looked like it would only fit for a short time. L looked too big and the store did not have the M/L in stock. I may have to order it online, which is fine 'cause it is cheaper also.
