pulling when other dogs pass

Hi all.

My 11 month old boxer Juno has recently started pulling vigorously when we pass other dogs. It has been getting bad and I am finding it extreemly hard to hold on to her. I used to be able to distract her with food, but that no longer works. She goes group walking with dogs 3 times a week off lead and there is no problems. When she comes across another dog off lead with me there is no problem (only that she dosent want to stop playing ). It just seems to be on the lead.
Smaller dogs like jack russells seem to bring out the worst reaction in her.
We have been to group classes and everything was fine too.

Advice greatly appreciated as my neighbours think I have a devil dog.!!

I think I will have to try this harness too. I have bought everything under the sun (except this) to stop our Bubba from pulling. Right now he we use the gentle lead that goes around the snout. It works... but not great. He gets used to the pulling and doesn't care after about 10 minutes of throwing a complete fit. This looks more comfortable and easier to handle. amazon here I come!

I have tried just about everything I can think of to stop my Juno from pulling towards other dogs, and what's worked best for us: body blocking. She shows any inclination that she's fixated on the dog and is about to lunge, and I tell her "hey!" and pivot in front of her. I keep my pressure on her if needed, but most cases she backs off quickly and we can resume walking. We don't come across many dogs since it's so cold out, but she's still making progress. By all means get the harness or something if you need more control. I have one but it doesn't stop my dog from lunging and she's still able to throw a lot of force against it, and ultimately I want to be able to walk her on just a flat collar.

I am going to order the harness, Raleigh pulls like a freight train when he sees another dog, plus he's 105 pounds and built like a horse, I know he only wants to play but I want him under control and not pulling my arm out of it's socket!

Tried the gentle leader...around nose..but he was not a happy camper and kept pawing at it and having a fit so...that's in a closet somewhere, we have tried the blocking method but once he tried to go through my husband's legs and got stuck as he is so big his body would not go through....fun and games so am off to order the harness:)

The harness or gentle leader can HELP you control your dog but they probably won't solve the problem. You need to work with your dog on attention and focusing on you instead of the other dog walking by.
When I walk my dogs and we see another dog approaching I either cross the street or turn around and walk in the other direction. I will only pass the other dog if I have my dogs under control and focused on me (high value treats work). The more you allow your dog to "practice" to lunge and pull towards another dog the worse the behavior will get.

Also, if getting the Easy Walk No-pull Harness, watch the video suggested in the directions......without it, the harness can fail you both. Worn properly and used as a training tool, it is a very good harness. BUT it takes training from the handler too. And a good key to using it is to pull to the side of the dog so the lead is pulling him around towards you. Don't pull the lead up and back towards you......this will only choke the dog and prevent the purpose of the front hook. LOL

I know not everyone loves them but the gentle leader works so well with our guy! He doesnt not pull at all when he has his gentle leader on. :)
