Hi all....
I am interested in learning anything about Providence....dog related or life related...good or bad..
We are thinking of moving there so we can buy a house and provide our dogs with the big back yard they so deserve.
But, we know no one there...
So I would love all your input...and if you know a good boxer vet in the area that would be a tremendous BONUS!

My goodness, where do I start...Although I live in Mass right now, I am from RI and still go all the time. It is an incredible state with so much to offer and Providence is a GEM! It offers everything a big city like Chicago or Boston does but on a more personal scale. Theater is wonderful, the restaurants on Federal Hill on world famous. The only bad thing I can think of is the housing prices here in Mass and RI have gone thru the roof so do your homework...many nice towns just outside Providence might be a little more affordable like Lincoln, Cumberland or even some better areas of Pawtucket. As far as the dogs go, I don't know of any dogparks but I'm sure there around and Dr. Truesdale, who is a champion boxer breeder, is right down the way in Seekonk, Ma..not 15 minutes from Providence. If you want to play you can't beet our beaches, Roger Willaims park is awesome and the Providence Water Fire (do a search on Google to see it) is a lovely way to spend the night. Providence and all of Rhode Island are a well kept secret. I absolutely love it there. My sister lives down in Narragansett but has lived in and near Providence as well. We visit at least once a year, and if we ever move anywhere else, it'll be to RI.

I can't give you a lot of info, as I'm in IL too, but I can say that the people in RI are wonderful. It's often joked about that it's such a small state and the population is so small, but that lends to a real sense of community wherever you go. It's also great that you can live pretty much anywhere in the state and commute to work!

I think it to be more dog friendly than here as well. It seems like everyone has a dog.

Please tell me more.
Where should we look for a home...and possibly a rental home as well for when we first arrive till we can purchase something. We walk the dogs a lot so safety is a big factor.
Give me suggestions for Boxer vets and dog friendly places...
I am thrilled with what I have heard thus far!!!
(Also, can someone please let me know how to PM as well...)

I'm here in RI too and it is a great place to live and work. I am in Newport which is always brewing with things to do in the summer. Things do quiet down in the winter though but it provides a nice change of pace. Housing is very high here still for both buying and renting though. It can also be tough to find places that will accept pets when renting. From friends in other areas of the country I've heard they've had much better luck finding rentals with pets. It is possible though. There is so much to do in our small state!!! I don't normally bring Mason to 'official' dog parks and I haven't had any trouble bringing him to other parks. I do play by the rules and keep him from others that may not appreciate him like I do, pick up his poop, etc. I use a vet in Tiverton that doesn't specialize in any breed in particular, but they are knowledgeable and both Mason & I love them! Newport is very dog friendly too and safe. Send me a PM if you want Mason's vet's name and some places in Newport to visit. I'm sure you'll be visiting the area once you're here! Good luck!

It's nowhere near as cold as Chicago.

However, when making your decision on where in RI to live, you should be aware that the inland, particularly the areas to the north and west of Providence normally get much more snow than the coastal areas.

It isn't uncommon for it to be raining along the coast, while the inland portions get buried under a blanket of snow. There are the rare years when the coastal areas get more snow, but those are quite rare.

The proximity to the ocean and the prevailing southwest winds moderate the coastal temps. Winters are milder, and summers are cooler as you get closer to the coast.

In the fall, the warm ocean waters can make for pleasant days while it's frosty inland. However, in the spring, the coastal areas are the last to see the trees leave out and the flowers to bloom. The spring temps can be fifteen degrees warmer inland when the ocean water temps are in the forties.

Providence is about an hour from Boston, and the casinos in Connecticut. It's about an hour and a half to Cape Cod, and three to four hours from the White Mountains in New Hampshire. It's a three hour drive to New York.

In addition, Rhode Island and the neighboring New England states are dotted with ponds, lakes and recreational areas for boating and camping. Others have mentioned the theater and restaurants on Federal Hill, which by the way has a colorful history.

There is plenty to see and do.
