Bella is almost one year old now and she has been getting more and more protective. She has been attacking at the fence whenever another dog comes close, and growls and barks when she sees someone coming to the door. She isn't aggressive at all- she will lick you to death even if she doesn't know you. I have been told that females are generally more protective than males, but I was just wondering if this was normal.

Yes, my female Sophie who is eight months old is much more protective then my two males 2 and 4 yrs old. She lets them know when anything is going on. I just think it is part of their nature.

How well was she socialized w/ other dogs? Does this only happen at home or when she sees other dogs out on walks, etc.? If it only happens at home and she's fine w/ other people and dogs anywhere else, she is just trying to protect her home.

Oscar just wants to play with everyone. So far we haven't seen any protective nature in him. He's just over a year old and is just a little love bug.

I think she is just protecting her home. She is very well socialized, does great with all dogs and people. It is just at home that she acts like that. Thanks for your input!

My 7 month old girl Riley is super protective of what she considers her "territory." I live in an apartment and from the time we pull up into the parking lot in front of my building to the time we get inside the apt she goes she barks at almost everybody she sees. Anyone that she doesn't know who comes to the door or comes inside or anyone who passes by outside...she doesn't shut up. But when we are in the car away from my apartment (store, dog park, etc) she is just fine! She is also protective of me and my boyfriend in our everyday activities...if I am in the shower she waits right outside the door. If all 3 of us are taking a walk she makes sure that both of her humans are within view. Is anyone else's boxer is protective as Riley is?
