I have no ideas. You should probably ask around locally . . . .be careful though, if this isn't their personality, you may cause damage to your pup's psyche.

I don't know if it's a great idea to train them to attack on command. I know others dogs have acted on instint when they feel something is wrong <and they were usually right> I would rely on thier instint and let them react to you and your feelings. Just my opinnion.

I have read that there is no need to train the boxer to defend or guard, it is natural instinct. The great thing about the boxer is that they are quick to assess the situation. Therefore less of a liability than the other bull breeds.

My friend has a boy named tiger, he trained him for protection with three commands. Watch, catch and let. Watch means that keep your eye on a person because he IS danger, he can point to anything and tiger locks his eyes on it and gets into attack mode with barking snarling and all the works, but doesn't move an inch. Catch means bite, he can point to anything, a person a dog a chair a tire, and he says catch, tiger bites and DOES NOT LET GO. Let, short for let go, and tiger releases the bite immidiately on command. Its really amazing to see how presice tiger is, his reaction to the command is absolutely always immidiate. Keeping in mind that tiger is a big sweety living in a house with a bunch of kids.
I also really want my lucky who is sweeter than a kitten to be able to stand up to a threat. I also agree with the previous posts that teaching a dog to bite, specialy boxers, is no joke, and it is in their instinct to protect. So i am going to teach him the watch command. i think that any potential perpetrator seeing a dog ready for attack will quickly change his mind.
On the instinct issue, we all know that all dogs have protective instinct. But our dogs live in loving homes, they have been socialized to death, tought not to bite anything and even chew only certain things. Thats why i do not trust that my dogs long supressed insticnt will come alive immidiately on the spot if someone came out of the blue with a knife to robb me.

What is the deal with so many people popping up wanting guarantee’s that their dogs will "protect" them??? Yes it's great to know your furry friend would help you out should such a situation happen, but Guard training is not the answer. Do you understand the liability of owning a Guard trained dog, the responsibility, the hundreds of hours (& dollars) spent training, the potential danger to innocent people & children if it isn't done properly, the mental stability & drive required??? I could go on & on & on. Are you willing to risk getting sued??? Have you checked into the laws regarding owning a protection dog in your area, extra insurance coverage, or if you'll company will even cover you?? Are you prepared & able to train with your dog religiously every week for the next 6-7 years?
Guard, Protection, Schutzhund training (whatever you want to call it) is NO laughing matter, & it's sure as heck not as simple as taking Fido to a couple of training classes & learning two or three commands. The knowledge, power, understanding, training & connection needed are immense. The ideal situation is a VERY experienced owner & trainer, a sound minded very emotionally stable young adult dog breed from WORKING lines that has been properly temperament tested, text book socialized, & has already established an extensive training record.
Outside of law enforcement guard training today is done for competion, period. Let these guys be pets, if you’re worried about security install an alarm system in your home.
I personally am in no hurry to start fighting against breed bans to own my Boxers. :(

You could phone up your local police dog training centre & ask for their advice. They will have lots of info either way.

stormkatz, what you're saying makes complete sense. to complete guard training a dog where I live by a professional costs about 1600 USD before all the other expenses of driving and such, that come on the side, and it takes 8 months training, 5 days a week, several hours a day. When the training is done, then you must treat your dog as a guard dog. This I will never do no matter what, and would never suggest it to anyone
But, i believe that there is a grey area in the middle of full blown guard dog and silly kitten. The reason may not be understood by all, depending on your lifestyle and the area you live in. But I can assure you that anyone thinking of this is looking for peace of mind, as i am.

i would just like to say that Maci is not trained to gaurd me, She is soppy as hell towards kids and adults (except dark skin men WITH hats as she was beaten before i got her) and has strangers stroke her everyday, i even take her on public trasport eg bus and trains as i don't drive (except dark skin men WITH hats as she was beaten before i got her) and i was walking her once and this group of people started threatening me and she warned every single one of them with a warning snap (just missing them) they all backed off and i carried on walking. She even scared me as i have never seen her act this way before!!!!! IMO If your boxer felt that you was in danger he WOULD protect you if needed. Just make sure you teach them the comand for letting go of anything and use that if needed but they would normaly warn first as i have found out
