It's funny that I read this post today - I just came back from the PetValu store where I returned my $65 bag of ProPlan Salmon for a full refund. My older boxer Bosco has been stuggling with food reactions since he was 8 weeks old (he's 3 now). We have tried everything from the cheap, grocery store brands to the perscription hypo-allegenic foods from the vet (they are crap by the way). I have recently discovered the dog food analysis website and have been doing tons of research on the food options available. I live in a small town, so the availability of the food is also an issue. I too thought that the ProPlan was a decent food when I bought it (it cost enough!), but Bosco reacted yet again. After reading the review of the ProPlan, I took it back in exchange for the Performatrin Ultra - Chicken and Brown Rice. Among all of the foods listed on the dog food analysis website and other similar sites I have browsed, this seemed like the perfect balance between quality and affordability, and happened to be available at my local pet store. I have it in the car and will be starting my two boys on it tonight. Wish me luck!
I would suggest going through the dog food analysis site and finding a 4 star or more food that is available to you at a price that you are willing to pay. Feeding 2 80 pound boxers can get quite expensive, so I went with the Performatrin Ultra. It is the best in the 4 star class, and there really wasn't anything negative in the review. At $65 for a 30 lb bag, it seemed like the best cost-quality ratio for me.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.
