Proper Age To Begin House Breaking....

Is there a proper age to begin housebreaking my puppy? She is 8-9 weeks old now and is having some difficulty. Is it too early for us to start? Thanks for any and all help. I hae also read that females are harder to housebreak than males. Is this true?

It's never too early to start. I started the day we brought her home and the breeder had started prior to that. Take her/him out right after eating, waking, playing and praise them to the hilt. I haven't been as lucky as some who get them trained right away, but it does happen if you are deligent about it. I think this is the worst part about having a puppy!

good advice everyone, we are new parents to an 8-9 weeker and he knows only to poop on the paper during the day if he's alone and outside all other times, but will squat anywhere, even right in front of us right after he has been outside. You are helping me not to be discouraged!

Patience is the key. At this age they are training us. Shotze is 2 months and she still has piddle accidents. I dont use a crate, I use positive reinforcement and persistence. You have to take them out frequently and reward them when they do good. It is very tiring but pays off in the end. :D

Start now. If you wait to begin housebreaking, you will only be making things harder for the both of you. You will have to break the bad habits while trying to teach you baby what is expected. I have been blessed with a nine week old female who refuses to potty in her crate. She will bark or whine when she has to go out. I just got her on 3/20 and son as I let her out into the yard she goes potty. she was born an raised in a barn so I guess this all came natrually for her. Sometimes a pup will soil in their crate if it is too big.

I agree with everyone.... start right now... everyone on here has given me such good advice..i followed some of the suggestions and they have all worked.. i got my pup when she was 6 weeks old..i started training her right away and she is now 3 months old and hardly ever has any accidents (knock on wood)... :D :D
