Has anyone fabricated any kind of cover for their prong collars?

We are thinking about getting one for Striker, maybe even Nellie. They are getting real bad with pulling. We take them out in public A LOT, and everyone stares at us, as the dogs pull us along!!

We have tried chokers, and it hasn't been effective for us. Right now, I just use regular nylon collars on them. I just gave up on the choker.

We also tried the stop and be a tree method. They just keep pulling.

Nellie is 53 pounds, and just turned 7 months, so I am anticipating that she will be able to pull as much as Striker does soon. Striker is over 60 pounds of muscle. Me walking both of them down the street must be funny to watch.

However, back to the purpose of the post, I met a lady at Petsmart with her boxer, with a prong on, and she had made a thin fabric cover for the prongs. It was just an appearance thing so it didnt look so horrible. The prongs were still very effective, but she just didnt like the look.

Cindy, I hope someone answers this post because I have wondered the same thing about making covers for prong collars. I use a prong collar on Tyson on occasion-it keeps him in check and stops the pulling. If he is really excited the chokers do nothing to keep him from pulling.

I have heard of people making covers for prong collars. I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't be done. I would think it would be fairly easy to make too.

Hi,

I have found that the prong collars are not effective with my boxer. She is real sensitive to them. While she is smaller(1yr 2months, 43 pounds) then youA boxer I use one on my 60 pound A.P.B.T and she still pulls. I would suggest a halti or control harness, I have heard good results with both for dogs who pull. a halti is like a harness except is goes up around the muzzel and prevents pulling. I would aslo recomend Obediance classes. They are great and they teach heeling and then you wouldn't have to worry about them pulling you down the streets. Hope I helped in some way

I wouldnt worry. Prongs are much safer than choke collers. My trainer uses prongs on some dogs and does a demonstration in class. He puts a choke on his arm and gives a correction. The coller leaves a bruise every time. He uses a prong on the other arm and no matter how hard he pulls it does not leave a mark. A prong distributes even pressure around the neck and will not harm the dog. You can try his exercise at home if you would like.
