Problems after switching food

We have two wonderful Boxers (Female is 2.5 years and Male is 9 mos). Both had been on Eukanuba but I thought they were pooping an awful lot (even for Boxers.) Some days we would have 10-12 piles between the two of them. During this time, we followed portions strictly and neither gets an inordinate number of "treats."

I took advice from a friend who had been feeding his dogs "Innova" brand food. A little on the spendy side, but all natural, no fillers, etc. I slowly introduced the new food by mixing in with the old until the old was gone and now both have been on the Innova for about 1.5 months.

The amount of waste has decreased, but I am noticing very soft and sometimes diarrhea. Is this simply them still adjusting to the new food? Should I go back to Eukanuba? Is there another recommended brand that others have had success with? I really don;t want to disturb their diet any more than I have.

I definitely wouldn't go back to the Eukanuba. If you decide to change, I would try another premium food before going back to that one, since it really is inferior in quality. IMO, I would first try the pumpkin, like Dempsey's mama said, and then if you decide to change, some good choices might be Canidae or Chicken Soup.

Forgive my ignorance, but are each of you recommending that raw pieces of pumpkin in the food may help? I just want to make certain I am understanding correctly.

Thanks for your replies.

If I may suggest, Beneful has been an exellent food for our Shelby. As far as the crappin goes, I thought it was just part of changing foods. Beneful is not to pricey and provides everything that she needs. Heck, I even like it. J/k

It does sound like it would be yummy, doesn't it? But Beneful is actually quite a low quality dog food. The ingredients are:

Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, sorbitol, tricalcium phosphate, water, animal digest, salt, phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium carbonate, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, vitamin supplements (E, A, B-12, D-3), added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), DL-Methionine, zinc sulfate, glyceryl monostearate, ferrous sulfate, niacin, manganese sulfate, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, garlic oil, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

You can see that the only meat that even made the top five ingredients is chicken by-product meal. Chicken by-products include things such as beaks, feet, and even feathers at times. Corn is a very common allergen for boxers and, for the most part, completely indigestible, as is wheat, and those two products make up three of the top five ingredients.

No ignorance to forgive. I had never heard of such a thing, either. You can use raw pieces of pumpkin, I think, but we are mostly talking about canned pumpkin (100% pumpkin, not the pumpkin pie filling with spices added). About a tablespoon added to their food is supposed to firm their poop right up. :)

Thanks very much jenjones. I will certainly give that a try. I will save the pie filling for myself and not the dogs.

I was surprised that even a "high quality" food like Eukanuba contains a lot of junk.
It just goes to show the power of advertising, huh? BTW, that is a good site to compare products! Thanks!
