Price of a puppy?

im definitely rescuing next time... not that i would trade jessie in for anything... but i wish i found this site before i got her

I too wish i found this site before we got our boxers...however as all of us i would never trade them in. My DH bought Layla from a petstore for 1200...we've been lucky though shes healthy and we haven't had any major health problems (knock on wood) Gunner we paid 700 from a local breeder. both parents were "show dogs", but before i came here i didn't even realize they did genetic tests on dogs. Thankfully i know what to look for now!!!

Rockne was from a breeder that wasnt in it for the money but he wasnt exactly a "serious" breeder either.He cost us 250$in 1993. He had plenty of health problems and he lived to be 12. Great dog and I miss him every day.

Through this site and growing up a little we did our homework this time around.Tula is from a full time breeder that does all the testing recommended,has numerous champions and takes great pride in his dogs. She is pet quality and cost us 800$ with a spay contract. Comparing her health to Rocknes is night and day.She is much more healthy SO FAR. It was tough finding a breeder with all the desirable qualifications with a pet quality pup under 1000$ in the Chicago area.If you dont rescue(if you do God bless you) find a good breeder and spend the money.

kind of funny

We paid 850 for Chloe and she will be coming home 6 days. We searched many breeders before we picked her. I will admit that BW HELPED SO MUCH in choosing the best way to make the purchase. But what is kind of funny, for the same price I paid, there are a few pet stores that charge that amount if not more. I was NOT interested in looking for a Boxer at a pet store, but if I had to buy food for my parents Shitzu I would just ask the price and get into some of the normal questions that one would ask before buying a boxer just for a good laugh. Yes I know it may be cruel to watch those pet store employees flounder around giving such bizzare answers but thats the clown in me!

We were going to pay 650 for our boy tuff. But early health testing showed he had a small heart murmur so we ended up paying 400. He gladly grew out of the heart murmur and is a very healthy boy if a bit skinny!. Our rescue Nicki was 250 and worth every penny.Plus the money went back to the rescue to help other dogs. next time though I think that we will look at getting a puppy again. I loved watching are Tuff grow and learn.

I found a breeder (it took about 5 weeks and 150+ e-mails) that sold GOOD puppies for a reasonable price. The breeder has a litter about once every 1-2 years. She used to be very active in showing - the bitch was a DOD - but stopped showing to start vet school.

The dam and sire were both health tested - heart, hips, thyroid. She had a "$$ back guarantee" on ANY genetic problems in the first 3 years - as long as the vet would provide proof. She will also take back the pup in the event that you have to get rid of a dog.

Chloe was $750 (+ a 6 hour drive one-way). I don't think she is "show quality" - I think she has too much white on her. But there were a couple of classic brindles that could be show quality that she was selling for $850 each.

Most BYB I found sold them for $450-$600 - most other "breeders" that showed their dogs regularly ran $1100-$2500 per puppy.

You just need to keep looking for the right breeder.
