We picked up our new boxer pup,Ozzy,on friday night.

On saturday morning we loaded Ozzy and his big brother Mingus, who by the way, is an American Pitbull Terrier, into the car for a trip to the vet's. On the way, to kill a little time, we stopped at our local Petco to pick-up some Nutro and to browse around

As it happens there was an older woman there setting up a table with Nutro pamphlets. She was talking to a young woman with a black lab about what kind of food to feed, when to switch from puppy to adult etc. Since they were standing in the aisle where I needed to be, I was waiting patiently at the end of the row for them to finish so I could get my cart in there to load the bag.
My husband came around the corner with Mingus. Ozzy was riding in the front of the shopping cart and he was looking around and having a good time.
The Nutro lady commented on what a pretty white face Mingus had and then proceded to ask us if we let him play with the puppy. We, of course answered we did let them play, with our supervision, after all Ozzy is only six weeks old.
This woman then said something I just couldn't believe. With a completely staight face, she said she didn't know if that was a good idea because and I'm quoting here "You know what they were bred for." end quote. I looked her straight in the face and said, "Companionship?" I got the bag of food and bailed out of there before I said anymore.

After we left the store I said to my husband that I should have asked her to which dog she was referring, as they were both bred to bait bulls at one point in time.

In defense of Mingus, and the fact that he's a pitbull, I have to say this. He has the best disposition of any dog I've owned to date. Male or female. He has the softest mouth too. He is a bit rambucious, but he's only a year old. He's in obedience class and is doing excellently. Also, from the minute he met Ozzy, he fell in love with him. He follows him around, watching over him. Last night Ozzy was in his crate sleeping and Mingus got up out of his chair and went and peeked at him, satisfied that he was ok, he crawled backup into the chair and went back to sleep.
I really wish that woman would have kept her thoughts to herself, especially in front of the lab owner. She also made some stupid comments to me about the food we were feeding Ozzy, which is nutro lg breed. This woman in my opinion needs to keep her mouth closed. She hardly struck me as professional or knowledgable about dogs in this instance.

Thanks guys for letting me blow off steam on this. It just chaps my hide.

I know exactly how you feel. But we must remember, it is the "thugs" who have given PBT's the reputation they have now. People will never change the way they feel about PBT's, until they are no longer used in illegal dog fighting. There was a boy walking down my street one day with a young PBT, and Mason got out of the fence. The boy started yelling to me that he had a PBT, so watch out for my dog. I was like, yea, and I have a boxer! It was like he was letting me know that his dog would attack mine.

A lot of people think that Mason and Leena are PBT's, but clearly they aren't. You can see Mason's photo in the Show off your dog forum. Because he has a longer snout, I guess?.

I wouldn't worry too much about what that lady said, although I know it's frustrating. Mingus showed the lady there that he isn't dangerous.

What really gets people going on these issues is the media. They show on television these shows where Rott's and PBT's are viciously attacking people and killing some. I am no expert on these issues, but everyone has their own opinions on these issues. Keep doing the good job with your fur babies, and forget about other people.;)

On the other side of things, I must admit that I'm a bit afraid of pitbull terriers. But I think it's their reputation combined with my lack of knowledge of the breed.
I think the problem is that there is little knowledge of them being a "good" dog for any reason, pet, working dog, etc. All we hear is what is on the news about agression and attacks on people and animals.
I think you were right to be mad at the woman for displaying her ignorance, but I think you'll also admit that the reputation of the breed is why she made her rude comments.

I am interested in hearing more about your pitbull terrier, so I can see the other side of the breed.

I don't think pitbulls are bad dogs unless they are trained to be. It's hard to believe they are just born that way.

This is true to an extent however, due to irresponsible breeding, agression is being bred into the breed and they are being born that way. They aren't all this way though. I recently dealt with one at our local shelter. He was used as bait in fighting. He was very submissive to people and a complete love bug and was luckily taken in by rescue! His chances of escaping his fate at the shelter were by far slim and none.

Sorry for the woman's ignorance and lack of consideration. I know pits are wonderful and loving gentle dogs if not trained to be vicious. One of Maggie's best play mates in NY was a pit her age, Juno, who was such a little love. The reason they loved playing together, I think, is because pits are also rough playing dogs and like to tug and get fiesty just like boxers do when they play.

Just ignore people like that woman. You could write an email to Nutro and tell them that you didn't appreciate the comment one of their representatives at PetsMart made. Might make a difference.

I was at the feed store a while back talking to a lady about Innova, etc. She asked what kind of dog I have. I told her a boxer. She stated that a few boxers have been stolen because people think they are pit bulls and they want to use them for breeding and fighting. My heart sank, I didn't realize there was such a problem here. Poorly bred and raised puppies who don't have a chance in life and were brought here on purpose, disgusting
When we were at puppy school Roxanne had a friend who was a pit, the only dog that didn't seem to mind her playfullness!

I agree with Dan I would contact Nutro and let them know what went on may make a differance down the road.

Thanks guys, I feel better.
One of the reasons we decided to get Mingus a baby boxer brother was because he needs someone who's going to play hard with him. He is such a gentle soul an so good with littl Ozzy. Last night before dinner they were laying on the sofa together and Ozzy was pulling Mingus' cheek so hard it was pulled all the way forward to his nose and he couldn't have cared less. He seems to know that Ozzy is just a little guy and he tries so hard to be gentle and tolerant, but he does let him know when he's had enough by sort of raising his lip. Then he usually goes somewhere where the little piranha can't chew him:LOL:
