How can I tell early if my boxer is breed? We have not caught them locked up yet but other things have happened! Help me decide if she is pregnant. I WANT SOME BABIES FROM MY BABIES!!!! I have 5 boxers at home and 4 of them are females but this one I hope is pregnant is my inside dog baby who I have had since 5 weeks of age. She will be two in January. The male I breed her with with be 1 year this month. He is a brindle fine male (of course). Please help.

She is too young to be bred, she is not even mature yet. Why are wanting to breed? Have you done all the necessary health testing? Are you aware of how many unwanted boxers there out there? If you want more boxers maybe you could rescue some that desperately need new homes.

Just because you want some babies from your babies is not a good enough reason to breed.
Please think again about what you are doing.

When I thought Pru might have been pregnant I called the vet and he said after 4 weeks you can bring them in and the vet can feel for the babies. I called every vet in my area trying to find out sooner and they all told me the same thing. Do you know how far along she should be? You can talk with your vet and see what they say.

About being too young - I have never really read about an age limit. Everyone and everything I have read just say to wait until the 3rd heat. I always figured by then they would be about 2 years, the same as yours. I wouldn't think she was too young, but if she hasn't reached 2 yet then she couldn't have had all her testing that she needs. I am still trying to get mine ready for breeding and I know it will still be a while because my oldest female is only 14 months. She can't have her hips tested and certified until she has reached her 2nd birthday. If her hips and elbows are good than she won't be bred until sometime after 2 years of age. By this time she should have already had her 2nd heat and maybe even a 3rd.

PS...I have recently learned that two dogs do not have to tie in order to mate. So what ever date you seen them do anyting you need to write it down and asume she conceived on that day.

With all due respect, there are many reasons to not breed your girl prior to her second birthday. This is a slow maturing breed, and many of them are not fully mature until closer to three. Breeding them before maturity is getting puppies from a puppy.
Hips cannot be OFAed until they are two, and any breeding potential boxer should have two thyroid tests a year apart, before a breeding occurs.
Heart disease: there is *no excuse* for not having a boxer cleared for both Aortic Stenosis and Cardiomyopathy. To breed any boxer without those clearances is, IMO, heartless. Ask any person on this board if they would want to lose a beloved family member to heart disease, and what they would think of a person who had so little care for the breed as to create pups from untested parents.

From your post, am I understanding you correctly to also say the following:

1) Your male is just now turning 1 yr old?
He also is way to young to breed. He also needs the genetic health testing, and as the previous post(s) have said, you can NOT get them certified until they are at least 2 yrs old.

2) All of your boxers live outside except for one? Boxers are house-dogs, not outside dogs.

Have you really thought about the costs to raise and maintain a healthy litter? It starts with the mother PRIOR to breeding, and continues until the pup(s) go to their new homes. Can you afford milk replacer to feed a litter if the mothers milk doesn't come in, or the mother dies? This can cost approx $100 PER WEEK, depending upon the size of a litter. Can you afford a C-section, if she runs into trouble? There are many more things that can happen, and I won't go into them here. You need to do more research on breeding. To breed properly, you will NOT make money. If you are lucky, you MIGHT break even.

Here are a few links for you to look at....I hope you change your mind on breeding.

First of all, I have a really big problem with all of you being so down on her for wanting to breed her dog. Where do you think your precious pups came from??? Secondly, not everyone is perfect. This is a health forum where people come for health information, not to be berated for what is done. I am the owner of a resuced boxer who we just found out is pregnant. She was never around a male dog since we have had her. Is it our fault that she was bred? We have given her a very good home and love her very much. I think you should be happy these dogs have such good homes.

Just my 2 cents.
