Because of allergies, I've been giving Roxie Prednisone pills from our vet. The last couple of days, her drinking and urination have increased dramatically. This did not happen last summer when she was taking the pills (one pill a day, for 10 days). Is this normal, or is there another problem?

Our experience with prednisone has been the same. Increased thirst and increased appetite and weight gain. There are many better resources now for allergies and alot of people have great results with allergy shots! There are many prescription medications also available that are not has harmful as prednisone (long term). Steroids really take a toll on the liver and kidneys.

Our boxer Pancho used to have allergy problems. He had one severe incident where his ears just stayed red and looked extremely irritated, we think it was from when we went camping. The vet prescribed the prednisone pills and he was very thirsty, etc.

The great thing though, is it seems he has grown out of the allergies, I don't know if the prednisone was the reason or something we changed in his diet that helped. He seems to be great, we also had a problem with yeast infections in his ear that we solved also, it may have been a combination of that, he's fine now. He had the prednisone last June or July.

Prednisone use

My poor girl, Kasha, is also on Prednisone for the treatment of allergies - 30mg, four days a week, along with an anti-histimine and essential fatty acid supplement. I'm trying to decrease the dosage (as directed by my vet) but when I do, the symptoms return. She has also had an increased appetite, thirst and urination. Maybe the dosage is significantly different than the last time you treated with Prednisone - just a thought. Although medications can be helpful and necessary, I just hate the side effects (including long term side effects of steroids). Does anyone have any hints, tips or suggestions on natural treatments for allergies? (Exact allergy is unknown.) Allergy shots may be the next stop....

There is another option first find a holistic vet,you can do phone consultations if there is'nt one in your area.Next look up the Barf diet.Nettle is a herb that could help with allergies. But a holistic vet will get to the root of the problem of the allergy.I use a vet who specializes in homeopathy and I have friends who use vets that use herbs and accupuncture, both work but the diet has to be improved. It does take time and our society is always looking for a quick fix, we forgot how to be patient with healing. The body can do amazing things with the right guidance and tools.I know a few good holistic vets if you are interested and can not find one. Also steroids take care of the problem for a while but there will come a time you will not be able to continue using it because it will do more harm.Since it does end up in the liver get a herbal liver detoxifier from a health food store and keep the liver clean.Thats pne organ that can repair it's self.So keep it healthy.

My boxer was also recently put on Prednisone for an allergic reaction to carpet deodorizer that I had been using (no longer using =) ) and the same thing happened with him.Alot of accidents in the house and going through about 52 gallons of water a day.The poor baby when he has an accident in the house he jsut stands there and looks at me with this incredibly sad face, as if to say I'm sorry Mama but I can't help it =(
Thank goodness for Nature's Miracle!!
Luckily he should only have to be on it for about another week =)
