Prednisone and urinating issue

So a friends boxer has "lions jaw" so they give it prednisone. Problem is that it can't control it's bladder and it urinates in their house.

Are there any tricks with dealing with this issue?

They are thinking of getting rid of the dog and possibly putting it down if they can't deal with this problem.

When Tyson was on prednisone, he also urinated alot. Unfortunately that is one of the side effects. If you do a search on prednisone, you'll find tons of info.
Will he be on this long term? I made sure I took Tyson out each hour when he was on it. Maybe a "doggie diaper" would help out some?
Some more people will chime in with more info than I have :)

That is a very common problem with prednisone. Your friends just need to take their boxer out more frequently. Is this a long term problem? I have never heard of "lions jaw".

The higher the dose of pred the more urination. It tends to make them drink and eat more, so of course they need to pee more. When Austin was on a high dose he peed and didn't even realize he was peeing. Once we cut him down the accidents stopped.

It sounds like from reading the article you posted that it is treatable and treatment time varies, from 4-10 months, so the poor boxer wouldn't have to be on prednisone for the rest of it's life. Unfortunately, frequent urination is a side effect of the medication, so your friends should increase the number of times they are letting their boxer out. I certainly don't think this would be a reason to get rid of the boxer or much worse putting the poor thing down. How old is the boxer?

I read the article too and it doesn't sound like it's a life time problem. Is this dog a puppy? It sounds like it usually starts in puppies.

Since the condition lasts for quite awhile, if I was them, I would put in a dog door so that their dog can go out when he needs to. If they are unwilling to manage the condition, then they probably need to find him a new home with someone that will. They certainly shouldn't put him down.

I've never heard of this in a Boxer, but I do groom a Cairn with this problem. He is slowly outgrowing it. Their vet told them he would most likely outgrow the problem by 12-15 months of age.

Tell them to hang in there and just know this will be a problem as long as he is on the Pred.

Unfortunately they do not all outgrow it. This boxer is 6 years old and has had it all of its life. I'm not sure if they let it go too long without treatment as a puppy or what.

our mix has allergies and is on prendisone all summer. we have the same issue. sometimes she is laying there and will just pee all over herself and not realize it. my suggestion is a diaper while the dog is in the house. they dont even seem to feel the urge to pee.... so a diaper is a good option.
