I have a 7 week old puppy and we have been showing her to scratch on the door when she wants out... Every once and a while she will go scratch on the door, and when we let her out she uses the potty.. She has only done this 3 to 4 times. She still is making mistakes. Is this normal? I know she is still a baby but just wanted to get everyones opinion on this.. Like Saturday when the weather was nice she scratched and went potty on two different occasions, but since then she hasn't done it lately. Didn't know if the cold and wet grass was keeping her from wanting to go out..
Thank you all for your input

At 7 weeks old, yes it is very normal for them to have accidents and continue to do so :) It takes awhile before they gain complete bladder control. I'm sure some of our more recent puppy owners can offer you some good advice! Good luck.

There is also a search button at the top of each page here and you can search the threads using search terms such as "house training" and "housebreaking" and find all sort of information on this issue.

Good luck.

Sounds perfectly normal - except possibly :D that your pup has learnt to scratch at the door SOME of the time. Sounds like one smart puppy... At seven weeks she's only a very little baby and it takes time for them to learn that the potty area is outside (only). I'd say you're well on the right track.

what sounds fabulous to me is that she scratches on the door period!!!! at such a young age nonetheless.

How did you get her to do that? I ask because I will be getting a 8 week old this weekend and never thought they could learn to scratch so young???

The fact that she is asking at all at this early an age is wonderful! Seven weeks is just a BABY :) Don't expect full potty training with NO accidents until they are much, much older. Like around 8 months. They will be trained by then, yes, but there might still be the occasional boo-boos. It sounds like your baby is very smart. In the meantime, you can help her learn by taking her out at regular intervals, every hour or so, and always about ten minutes after each meal. Use your "potty phrase" ("outside potty," or "go pee/poop," or whatever) and when she goes, then praise, praise, praise her. Your girl will learn in no time.

Sounds good to me! keeptaking her out after sleeps and eating and playing. Try using the bell method, works well and saves scratches on your door. use search button top right, bells.

Thanks for the reply. You asked how I got her to scratch at the door, well everytime I go to take her out I sit her down in front of the door, and pick up her front paw and actually scratch the door with her paw.... Sounds funny don't it, hopefully it works... So far so good :p

Help !

I need some help. My 12 week old baby Thor is having a rough time. He goes to the door and stares out. But I open the door and he continues to stare. If i go out there with him alone, he will go. otherwise he just has accidents all over the house.
My husband and I work the same time so thor is in his crate. My question is where should he be when we are home. I just need help with this crate training thing.

Please help !!!
