Bubba is 6 1/2 weeks old. I know that he still is real little and the whole potty training issue is confusing. He has the part about "peeing" outside undercontrol. He understands the words for that. WE spend about 30 minutes outside with him after he pees and then he comes in the house and then does the rest of his business. Is there anything i can do to stop him and get him to understand that he is supposed to do that outside also? Any suggestions would be great

Oh, so you think that he has the peeing part down?
Well, like you said, he is still very little and certainly is not going to happen overnight. Potty training is probably the hardest and most taskfull thing that you can teach your dog. First, you have to limit his space around the house. Once he gets familiar with his surrounding, such as where he eats, sleeps, and plays, then he will avoid those places to relieve himself. Second, you have to control his water intake and food intake. Don't free feed him or else you won't know when he has to go potty. After a couple of days, you will notice a trend in potty schedule from your pup. Always keep an eye on him for signs that he needs to go potty, such as walking in circles and sniffing the ground. Puppies will go very often, sometimes thirty minutes apart or sometimes even hours in between. If you catch him relieving himself inside the house, let him know that that is unacceptable by changing your voice tone or picking him up and putting him outside to finish his business. Other than that, you will just have to give him time to learn where he needs to go to go potty. Our trainer told us that a dog is only considered potty trained if he goes a straight 1 1/2 months without any accidents.

so glad im not alone

I am goin through the same thing, my girl is 8 weeks old and she prefers pooping in her crate and living room rug instead of doing it outside. I am hoping that it changes soon before she and her poop get bigger

You can do a search here at Boxerworld using the gray search button at the top of each page, and use search words such as housetraining, housebreaking, potty AND training, etc., and you will come up with TONS of information on how to handle your situation.

Good luck.

There is a lot of good advice out there, but this is what my Momma told me. I always listen to my Momma.(now that I know better from learning the hard way) When we got Rowdy, we kept him in a large TV box. Leave the flaps on and tape them upright when the puppy gets big enough to climb over the sides. We only let him out after feeding him.(several times a day) When we took him out, we would walk him to the back door, scratch his paw on the door, lead him outside, and when he does his business, put him back in the box. He'll have accidents in his box. Just change the newspapers in the bottom of the box as needed. After about 2 weeks, Rowdy's box stunk to High Heaven. We tried to let him play in the house for 15-30 minutes at a time. He had accidents occaisionally. We have the luxury of a 1/2 acre backyard and another dog for him to play with. So we wouldn't let him out of our sight during his daytime indoor visits. At that point we bought a crate and let him spend every night in the crate for 2 weeks. He never messed in his crate once. He must have learned from the box experience. Since then, he has slept indoors all night next to my bed on a pillow and hasn't had an accident since he was around 9-10 weeks old. He's 12 months old now.gradicon

I don't know if that would work for everyone, but it worked for my Mom's schnauzers and my boxer. Lots of Luck!
