We have a 8 month Boxer. We can't use a crate because we have a 10 year old Am Staff Terrier who doesn't like the Boxer being locked up and will cause chaos.

Molly, the 8 month Boxer, knows that she is supposed to go to the bathroom outside but sometimes she opts not to. Is there anyone that can give me advice on training methods and/or a timeline for training

potty training

Until Lusi learned to whine at the door we just took her out all the time. If she didn't eliminate we took her back inside right quick, so not to confuse her and make her think we were out playing. It took alot of patience and still does...she still has accidents every once in a while. We decided not to crate train her so Lusi sleeps in bed with us. If I heard her tags gingle once during the night we were at the back door faster than you can say "go potty"! I sleep with one ear to the wind! The carpet around our house has the tell tail dark spots of a puppy in training, but hey thats what they make staine removers for. And besides we can ALWAISE get a new carpet, But there will only be ONE Lusi!!! Just remember to go to the same door every time, and that a treat or "Good Girl!" right after the duty is done will only reinforce all the work you do.

good luck

We got Prince when he was 9 weeks old. He was potty trained within 2 weeks. We confined him to a small area, watched how soon he relieved himself after eating/ drinking, and how many times between eating / drinking he would go. After figuring out the average we put him out just before he would go. Then give plenty of 'atta boys' while he was going and give a treat after. We couldn't catch him 100%, but it saved alot of soggy newspapers/ paper towels. Now he goes to the door and scratches/ whines. We use Petzyme to clean, its excellent for carpet stains (Petsmart). I recommend you use a crate. And unless the 10 yr old terrier cleans pee/ poop, put him in the crate and tell him to SHUT UP!

Have Fun ! smashicon

I have a Molly as well! During the week days, she is crated while I'm at work, and shes has been good (lately) about not messing in the crate. When I get home, I take her immediately out and she makes potty int he grass outside. Well, considering that she is only 3 months old, I take her out probably every 45 minutes, whether she is showing signs of having to make potty or not. I take her outside and constantly tell her "on the grass, Molly, on the grass" until she finally goes. Now, when I take her out (slightly less often), I tell her "on the grass, Molly" and she goes! Of course, this method takes a lot of time and there WILL be accidents. I have read never to scold when your dog messes where you dont want him/her to. Instead, just ignore the dog, pick the mess up and clean with an odor neutralizing cleaner. Now, I know that your Molly is 8 months, but thats still considered a pup, so I would start all over with her. Take her out every 45 mintues (or sooner if you think she might have an accident) and use the same command every time. Eventually, she will learn to make potty on command, equalling no more hassle for you and a well trained boxer!
