Potty revenge

Hi everyone!

Here is my potty problem of the week. I have read several of the other potty problems but didn't see one like this.
Our 12 week old boxer is pottying in the house. Not poop (unless the kids don't take her out when we aren't home) but potty. I spoke with my breeder, she and I both agree that we think she is doing it for attention. She tends to only do it when everyone is home and then she does it right in front of us. Or within in a few feet (if we don't see her). Here is an example, last night my son and I were cooking (he at the counter rolling cookies and me at the stove making supper) there was maybe 5 feet between the 2 of us. She pee'd right in between us. She didn't tell me she had to go out. She just pee'd on the floor.

I notice when it is just her and I during the day, she never has accidents. But the moment everyone else comes home and there are all kinds of activities going on she does this. And it is always within a few feet of someone. When I tell her she is bad she just looks at me. Scolding doesn't seem to faze her. ( I have had dogs before and when I scolded them they would look sad. Molly just looks at me like "What's your problem?")

So, does anyone have any suggestions as how to get her to stop doing this for attention? We are crate training, but she is only in there when we sleep or leave the house. She is always out otherwise. I'm willing to try anyones suggestions.

Thanks for hearing me out.

You have to remember that she is only 12 weeks old. At this age she is still very young and accidents are going to happen. They say that they're not completely housebroken until they are approximately 6 months of age, give or take for each individual dog.

How often do you take her outside when it's just you and her?? What about when everyone is home?? Do you bring her out right after eating, drinking, playing, napping, etc. Does she play more with your kids than she does when it's just you two?? If so, that could be contributing to it. The more active she is, the more likely she is to "forget" that she's supposed to head to the door until it's to late.

At this age, she needs very frequent potty breaks. I'd say every 15-20 minutes. When she goes outside, praise her like crazy. Try to associate the words "go potty" while she's going. That will also help in training. Both of my boys know this command and will happily do it when I ask. You may also want to do a search on "bell training". A lot of people have had great success with this method.

Just be patient and consistent. Remember that she is still a baby and needs to be taught the proper way. Boxers are intelligent dogs, your girl will figure it out soon enough. :)

Good Luck!!

Scolding a dog who has accidents in the house is one SURE way to get the dog to potty in front of you for attention. Good or bad attention; it doesn't matter to the dog.

Evidently, when everyone is home doing things, the dog expects to be paid attention to and if he isn't getting that attention, he will poop/pee in front of you because YOU taught him that doing that will ALWAYS get your attention. Dogs do what works for them to get what they want.

There is a wonderful booklet on housetraining available at http://www.dogsbestfriendtraining.com . It should help you with resolving this situation.

Good luck.

I take Molly out about every 1 to 1 and half hours. She seems to do fine with that. During the day there isn't much activity. She is pretty much Mom's lap dog and when she gets up I take her out and she always goes potty for me. When the kids come home from school they also take her out just as often. They play with her some but playtime doesn't usually hit until my husband gets home and then he plays with her all night usually. It just seems she does it when we are busy doing things.
As far as when I scold her, I tell "NO" and take her outside. Which by this time all she does is either play outside (she loves the snow we got this last weekend) or she poops.
She is a very good girl 90% of the time, it's just this potty thing when times are hectic around the house. And it always seems to be happening pretty much around the same time of day.
I'm hoping to have her pretty close to completely potty trained in the next couple of month. (I know this is pushing it.) Because I have a 4 and 1/2 month baby and he will be crawling soon. I really don't want to worry about him crawling through urine.
Thanks so much for all the advice.

I would suggest just taking her out more frequently durring this time of day. Her excitement level is higher around that time because of the kids. Try getting her out every 20min. Muggsey wasnt totally potty trained until he was about 7months old some dogs take longer some less. I would say that you have a while to go yet being as she is only 12wks old.
