Potty in House

I have a two year old boxer that we purchased four months ago. He was mostly an outside dog and wasn't neutered until a couple of weeks before we got him. He is awesome and we love him to death - BUT sometimes he pees in the house when we are gone. He is not in a crate, and I don't want to resort to that. He doesn't tear anything up, he just pees sometimes. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Yesterday we were gone for 4 hours and he didn't go, then today, we were just gone for less than an hour and he went. Any suggestions?

If he was mostly an outside dog, he probably was not correctly potty trained. If so you will have to teach potty training from scratch. Put him on a strict schedule, and treat/praise him whenever he does his business in the right place. Whenever you see him going in the house, stop him immediately and take him outside to finish. DO NOT GET MAD, just stop him and take him out, treat/praise when he goes in the right spot.

Besides schedule you will have to learn to recognize his signs for impending potty activity and take him out then also. After a meal and after sleeping is another time to take him out. It takes a while but sooner or later it clicks in place and all is good.

There are tons of good threads on housebreaking just use the small blue box titled search on the upper right of the page and search this site under Housebreaking.

Luck to ya :D

I agree with Eric. Since he was always outdoors he would not understand that going potty in the house is a no no. They are very intelligent and I know if you are consistent with the training he will catch on in no time. Good luck :)

thanks for replies

Thank you both for your responses. Unfortunately (fortunately) Zorro never goes when we are home. He only pees when we are gone, and sometimes he doesn't even pee then. I really don't think he HAS to go, I am wondering if it is an anxiety problem? Thanks again for your help.
