We took our precise Ryleigh Ann to be spayed yesterday. I really didn’t want to do it, however, we never wanted to breed her and the health risks of not spaying were too much for us.

Here is my question. Can someone give me a play by play on the 48 hours after the surgery? My baby isn’t drinking or eating and it is scaring me. I have read that most vets keep the dog overnight, is this best because we picked up Ryleigh Ann 4 hours after the surgery.

These are the things we are doing now, hand feeding water, and she has taking 2 pills for nausea. We slept with her in the living room next to the kennel all night. She has vomited a few times and it is nothing but yellow stomach acid.

When should I start getting worried if she hasn’t eaten?

Please, a little advice and guidance will help a bunch.

I think the veternarians that opt to keep the dogs overnight do so, in part, because they know how distressing it is for the owners to see the dog so out of it. I think keeping them overnight, although they say it is to monitor them in the am is done to greatly reduce the number of panic calls they get.

In a day or two she will feel 90-100% better. Do not push food. It will just upset her tummy. Let her rest, watch the incision and make sure she starts to drink water the day after surgury.

I know it is tough but you DEFINATELY did the right thing.

WOW!!!! What a scare that was for us. She seems to be doing better. She still isnt drinking water. The Vet said she was fine and if there was more blood in the vomit to bring her in. The vet said that sometimes the excessive vomiting could cause bleeding in the upper stomache syphincter. Ryliegh Ann is acting alot better. We now have to restain her from trying to jump up on things.
Thanks for the input. I wish there were a site to see the Post Spay issues and how to deal with them.

Great to hear it's nothing going on. I would try to get her to take some water so she doesn't get dehydrated. Sounds like things are on their way back to normal.

We were told not to let her have any food or water for several hours (until the next morning) after her spay. We could give her ice, but no water, because of the risk of upsetting her stomach. You may want to try the ice instead of water.

If she won't eat her kibble maybe try giving her some peanut butter or some cheese. i don't know any boxer that would turn down a good lick of peanut butter. at least it would get something in her belly.
Good luck!
