Zeus has been losing hair in patches on both of his side, and the vet thinks the cause maybe low thyroid. I won't get the results until Friday and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem with their dog. If so do they just give meds to up the thyroid or is there something else that is done. Any help or info would be great. Thanks

This could be a thyroid issue, or it could be what is called "seasonal flank alopecia" - a common condition in Boxers that generally clears up spontaneously in a few months.

If it is the thyroid, you can give medicines (soloxine), glandulars, or sometimes diet changes will help. It depends on what stage of disease you're looking at.

Austin has seasonal alopecia and is starting to lost the hair on both sides right now. It's usually back by June!

I just got off the phone from making an appointment to take my Tyson in to be tested for Thyroid problems. He is also losing his hair on his sides and also the inner parts of his legs. He has also gained alot of weight the last two years. I think it's better safe then sorry to have things checked out.

Zeus has also had weight gain, but has not been eating anymore than usual. Now that we have Roxy, he's getting alot more exercise so hopfully the weight will come down a bit. If it does just turn out to be the seasonal alopecia do I need to do anything for him. He doesn't scratch and the skin doesn't seem to be irritated, other than the hair loss. As for switching foods I feed him Innova now are there better ones out there for skin problems?

I found out 2 yrs ago Destiny had a thyroid problem. She starting losing her hair on her sides really bad and gained weight. She's been on meds ever since. I took my other one, Chy, to the vet today to check her thyroid. She has been losing her hair also. She doesn't have any other symptoms, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
