I know this may be strange to all of you, but I'm in the process of finding my first boxer. I joined this site to gain as much info as possible before making a purchase. I have always loved boxers, and after long (and persuasive) discussions with my fiancee, we have decide to try to find a boxer for us. I'm leaning more towards a little older boxer. We haven't owned a dog together, and thought a puppy for our first may be a little over whelming. Im a police officer and work from 3pm-11pm. My fiancee is in school from about 9am-3pm, then comes home for about an hour, then goes to work from 4pm-9:30pm. I'm thinking the times no one is home is not to bad for a boxer to be in a crate...please tell me if I'm way off! Also, I have finally found a boxer that may suit us. It's a 1 yr old, registered. My only prob is that this lady only wants $150 for her, and she looks great and is supposedly very well mannered and trained. That seems kind of cheap for such a great dog. Owner is moving into an apartment is her reason for selling the animal she so loves. I'm a little timid on taking her word, but I guess thats all I have to go on. I have tried numerous humane societies, and rescue shelters in the area, but boxers are just not easy to come by in those places (which is a good thing). what do yall think?

I wouldn't worry about the price either. There are a lot of purists out there who think that dogs aren't good enough until they cost a certain amount of money. However, if you only want the dog as a pet, does it really matter how much it costs? I would take the dog and love it like it was a national champion! That's how I feel about my boys.

WOW!!! Thats a big step. At 1 yr she is ready to start riding with you. Is there any way you could spend time with her? Never mind the price, thats not how you messure how good the dog is, onlyby spending time with her. Will the dept. allow you and her to go to K9 school? Sounds like yalls schedules are very busy and the dog will get left alone alot. They do need to get out of the crate about every 4 hours for atleast an hour, also crate time will probably be spent sleeping, so she will be ready to rip when you get in. Hopefully the two of you can work together, every police officer I know that works with a boxer say they will never work with any other breed again! Plus consider your fiancee, is she realy wanting this dog or is she doing it for you. Boxers usally win over everyone that spends time around them, but with her schedule will she want to spend time with the dog? I'm sure you will be pleased with the outcome, as it sounds your first boxer has been along time coming.

I agree about the price. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think it is great you did all this research too and it is wonderful that you are going to give this little girl a home and that you realized that a 1 year old was better for your lifestyle (at the current time) now rather than later.

Working people have boxers and do crate train so I would not worry about it
too much. Being that she is a little older, when the time comes and she seem ready for it, you could always gate her in the kitchen to give her some more space. Note: Boxers are Pro Counter-Surfers, so if you leave it in reach, it is fair game. lol.

I am sure if you guys go and meet her, she will be coming home with you. They are just irresistible.

Good Luck

It sounds like your dog will only be home alone from 4p.m.-9:30p.m. I don't think that is bad at all. You will just want to get as much excercise and play time in as you can through the day and then a good walk at night. I think it is great that you are doing your research and have realized that an older dog better suits your family right now.

As far as the cost for the dog you are considering, if this person bought the dog as a puppy and now just can't keep her do to relocating, it is probably not odd that she is asking so little for the dog. She probably doesn't think she can get the same price for her dog now that it is not a puppy. I wouldn't worry about the price, but if you can go and spend some time around the dog before making the decision then you could see how the dog behaves, how well she is trained already, health conditions, etc. for yourself.

Good luck!!!

When I read about the price the first thing that came to my mind was the lady is weeding out the people looking for the free dogs. Someone willing to pay for an older dog is more than likely to be serious about really wanting a dog. Gunner came to us free at 4 years of age. His previous owner was very specific about the type of people and family she was looking for to give Gunner a home. We happened to have the kids, fenced yard and the time for him.

Hope you decide to get the boxer. They are great at any age! :D

Not to discourage you.. but 1yr old is not "older" by any means. Still very much a "puppy", except that she will likely be potty trained. Other than that, she'll be very vibrant and full of life. Not a bad thing.. but do consider that as well for all the hours that you'll be gone. Granted it looks worse when you first think about it. I just went back and figured it out.. it looks like she would be alone for maybe 5-6 hours total, which isn't that bad really. Then spring break is coming up so your fiance will be home during the day with you and then during the summer when school is not in session at all. So it'll only be for a couple more months.

GL!

i agree about the "weeding out" that this lady might be doing. I'd also ask for medical records, a number to her vet so you can talk to someone else about her dog. Ask what sorts of training has it had, and if she's been spayed yet. She ultimately should be "interviewing" you, but i would do the same back to her.. if she seems like she's just tryin to dump the dog on you, i'd be wary. But if she's truly asking tons of questions, tryin to find the ideal home, i say go for it. again, price is not an issue.. there are lots of people out there looking for "free dogs" for dog fight bait, or to use as breeding machines (esp. an unspayed female), so she may just be trying to deter these types of folks. Good Luck! i hope she's a good match! :D
