I live in Maine....we're prepared for cold and snow. 100 degree weather for 4+ days in a row? Not so much. We don't have central A/C (have 1 window unit in our bedroom)....it's 85 in my house right now.

Johann has his pool in the backyard when he's outside (very briefly, doesn't stay out long) and he's getting plenty of water, but still seems so miserable. No walks or playing outside the last few days due to the heat. We tried to go to a rally class today and he just laid down and wouldn't move, poor boy.

Any other ideas on keeping cool in the heat? I think I may drag his crate up from the basement and make him stay in the bedroom with the A/C on because he won't stay in there on his own.

Same here in RI. The airconditioner is running 24/7 but can't keep up with the heat. Happy and Sky are laying around all day... We go out early in the morning and late in the afternoon maybe 20 or 30 minutes. I wish I had a little pool for them, that sounds like a good idea!

We're suffering from the same heat here in Massachusetts. Just drove to dunkin' donuts with the AC blaring for an iced coffee (for me) and plain munchkin for Tess and Tuck. :) Anything to get them out of the house for a bit!!

We have the kiddie pool out back, lots of ice in the water bowl, and have tried the hose a bit (they don't like it too much). Tuck's a big fan of the ice - he'll rescue every last cube from the water bowl. I just need to remember to take him out to go the bathroom a little more often!! Good luck staying cool!

My babies love crushed ice cubes. Bella will come running when she hears the ice machine going in the fridge! If they get too hot you could try taking a cool pack from a lunch pail or serving dish and place it in a blanket to lay on (if they will) or in their bed to lay on. Hope you keep cool!

We have it here in PA too :( We are keeping the a/c downstairs running for them during the day, and at night we keep a fan running. Around 5am, they decide to come to bed with mommy and daddy. We let them outside in the mornings for about 1/2 an hour. That is at 6:30am. They spend the rest of the day inside. By evening, they are ready to go back out. They play outside from about 7pm-9pm. I keep a spray bottle handy and spray Tyson down with it. He absolutely HATES water LOL. We bought a $3 sprinkler for Bailey to play with a couple months ago. So she plays with that or with the hose when I water my flowers. Tyson will only drink from it.
They also eat ice cubes but they melt too quickly. I just make sure they have some in their water outside when they are playing :)

Things are very warm here in southwestern Ontario, too. Thankfully, we have central air and our home is comfortable. However, the dogs want to go outside and play, but they're not out for long before they're standing at the door wanting a reprieve from the heat. I went out and bought a children's pool for the dogs today. Sarge just thinks it's a nice, big water bowl, but Chief has no reservations about getting in the pool to cool off. Perhaps a cold, damp towel placed over the dogs would help keep them cool. You could even throw a dampened towel in the freezer for a while and get it really cold before draping it over the dog. Just a thought.

It's been pretty miserable here too. We do have central air though. But I don't know if Juno minds the heat too much, she still hangs outside for most of the day. I actually have to keep an eye on her and make her stop playing if I feel like she's had enough, because I don't know if she knows when to stop! She just keeps going and going until she is panting like mad and her tongue is out as far as it can go, and it looks like she could collapse at any moment... but she still wants to run and play!

To help keep her cool I'll set the kiddie pool up, toss ice cubes in her water (which she usually just pulls out and munches on), spray her with the hose, and on walks I'll bring her to the lake so she can hop in and cool off. She manages well though... I think she handles the heat/humidity much better than I do :)

cooling vest !

ok .. i am in MICHIGAN .. hello it should be about 70 ! well we are also in the hundreds .. we have a kiddy pool .. sam thinks its a big puppy cup ! and wouldnt dream of getting wet in it ... "naughty " loves it .. i will post a pic ... BUT ... at the " high end " pet store next to THE WE HAVE PUP ICE CREAM STORE ( we where there ) the had ( in the window ) a " pup cooling jacket " looked pretty much to be like a wrap around winter jacket style .. but with tubes of jell ( thinking u throw in the freezer ) kinda deal .... looked very nice and pricey ... but if u could afford it .. might be something to look for on line !

we will just stay in the A/C till it cools of a bit in the evenings .. sam is getting a bit rowdy but i can live with a bad dog better then a sick dog ! :)

* weren't we just complaining about it being to COLD to take our babys out a cpl mo ago *

On a side note.........check the forums for a post about ice in the dogs bowl. IT CAN cause muscular restrictions in the stomach with can turn to bloat. Dogs should have room temp water to drink. Ice cold water........well, we know what a brain freeze is like! LOL Dogs get it in their stomachs. Be very careful in this heat. Wait til the dog is cooled off before offering ice. This problem occurs when their core temp is high and the ice entering causes the muscular contriction.

Just wondering...does that go for the frozen yogurt treats, too? I never thought about them being too cold. Betty loves them on a hot day.
