If he needs to go twice, who can I get the second one out of him by the time I leave for work?

This works for me: We don't have a fence so MAgoo goes out to potty on his cable if I can't stand out there holding his leash. However I'm too paranoid to leave him in the yard alone so I end up standing in the doorway waiting for him to do his business then I unhook the cable and he runs back in. Well anyways the point is it was freezing standing there in the doorway and I had the baby crying in the other room so I started giving him a little cookie when he would quickly do his business and come back in, if he dwadles around and wastes time No cookie. Now the goofball wants a cookie everytime he poops. =) Once he expects one you can give him one only some of the time but he will still react the same way in hopes of getting the treat.

Maybe you could take him on a walk. Whenever I walked Cody he would always go and the same with Duke.

I think the walking helps to get them to go. Maybe not though, but it is worth a try.

I have also read that the crate is only to be big enough for them to stand up, turn around and lay down.

Was wondering how it's going with Gregory's "poopy problem"? I was just browsing the forums and saw this thread and I felt your frustration! We all know how hard it can become when potty training a pup! I wanted to stress that it is very important that his crate is only small enough for him to sleep...turn around and stand. I learned this the hard way too, trust me, but when I sectioned it off so Xena did not have much room, she stopped having accidents. There may have been only a couple but once she realized that too much was getting on her and she had no where to sleep, it DID stop. Hang in there...sounds like you have one head-strong lil'guy there! It does get better.

About the soiling in the crate issue.

I am a new member to BW. I saw your problem while browsing thru forums. Can I ask,how old is your new dog .Is he a puppy or an older dog. Understand, I am no means any kind of expert. I have just been through the same experience myself a little while back with our now one yr. old female.
She Would do it alot in the crate.Both urine and excrements would cover the crate floor every morning when i got up for work.I got sooo tired of rinsing out that crate !!! .My wife or I would take her out very often during the day and night.Several time in the wee hours of the morning just for good measure to make sure she would'nt do it,but no luck.Her crate was a bigger size crate,my dog was able to move around in it alittle. I read or heard of an idea that might work for you as it did for us.That is if your crate is a big one.
We took small empty box's and put in the back of the crateas a wall.this gave Ava only just enough room to lay down comfotablly.It did not stop the incidents from happening totally, but it did slow it down alot and give us a chance to open the crate from time to time and not have urine or such in it. Therefore she was able to receive a great big praise and hug. As she got older we took out the box and went to something smaller ,to adjust to her size.We went thru a few box's during this process.Dont leave a soiled box in the crate. remove it or whatever you as a wall use as soon as you find out she/he soils it.Hope this will help you if this is your problem.Ava soiling our carpet is a different story.NOW that was a job !!!

How long after he eats breakfast is it before he is in the crate?
My girl does her early morning business before eating, then again (both) after within an hour.
She will also go *sometimes* #2 in the middle of the afternoon, depending on the amount of treats that she has wrangled out of me. The after dinner combo is not a guarantee for her....maybe thats the reason for going twice in the AM within a few short hours.
I guess I am just wondering if your pup is going #2 before breakfast....and also needs to go again after, or not going before thus the reason for after while in the crate.
I hope that some of this made sense, (I didn't get a good night's sleep)LOL.

That's Luka's schedule too.
Gregory's dad- Luka soiled his crate also and he just grew out of it about 3 weeks ago (he is 5 months). It sucks coming home to a poopy dog. There wasn't anything I could do, (he was trained to go in a crate type play pen from the breeder) I just waited til his bladder got bigger. It was the worst- so far- of Luka's puppyhood. I think it was more of a "I'm left alone and freaking out" thing too. With this issue, I've learned it just takes time- time for them to grow up a little and time to adjust to a schedule. It might also be throwing him off that you're back to work and not home with him- maybe he's doing it for attention or he's upset over being left alone. You may have to just tough it out til he gets a little older. Gregory is still pretty young.
