Can anyone tell me much about Parvo? I have been reading about it online. I just rescued a handsome 3 month old shepard mix on friday and he has bloody stools this am. I took him to the After Hours clinic and they said it was Parvo. He has been eating and drinking but just voimited a little bit ago. They wanted to keep him over nite but also wanted $600 to do it. I was a medic in the army and so they told me I could give him an IV at home to keep his fluids up. I just ordered Parvo Guard online. Has anyone had any experiances with Parvo or Parvo Guard in the past? I am heart broken. I tried to save this poor little guy but the outlook sounds so grim now.........

This is a pretty good article on the disease. If you have other dogs I would keep them separate as no vaccine is 100% guaranteed against Parvo. Also, the virus can live in the environment for up to 9 months so if this puppy doesn't make it you should not get another one for probably at least that long. Good luck!!

We found out that our Buster had parvo two days after we rescued him, and he ultimately spent a week at the vet's. I have never heard of parvo guard, but do know that Buster's meds had to be changed several times over the course of a week.

As said in the previous post, the virus will stay in the environment for quite some time. You must disinfect both the yard and inside of your house - we used a bleach solution.

Good luck, and do keep us posted ~ Cathy

When Maggie had it. we used a mix that a breeder (not Boxers) friend of mine came up with it is kind of expensive but works wonders....at takes Albon, Spectam (scour stop) Dyne (dietary supliment) and Flagil It is all mixed together and given orally along with LOTS of fluid. If you want the amounts of each and the dosage let mw know. The highest ingrediant is the Albon.

If you could find out for me that would be great. It seems like most people use a "home remidie" Thanks

We took a bottle of Albon( 473 ml.) poured half into a different bottle then filled one bottle to 3/4 full with Dyne ( bought at the feed store, Dietary supplament) add 30 cc of Spectram (from the feed store, aka scour stop for swine) then 55 Flagil pills (250 ml) crushed to a very fine powder. add all together and shake well store in dark bottle in refridgerator. give 1 cc per 5 lbs for the first day. 3/4 cc per five lbs twice a day for the next 5 days. We also gave her yogart 3 cc every morning. and LOTS of pedialite (sp?) This pulled my Maggie through and also a friend of mine had a puppy that was so bad the vet. did not think it would live you should see him now. I hope this helps. My vet had never heard of this but he said there was nothing in it that would hurt Maggie. Please keep us posted.

Parvo comes in like 10 different strains it can vary from killing them in 48 hours to only having flu-like symptoms, it also lives in the ground for 10 years and the only thing that kills it is bleach,

I have had lots of experience with parvo, and it is devistating most of the time, but some times you get lucky and they pull through, it all depends on the strain and the immune system of the pup.

Sorry to say, since you have brought this pup home, you have poisoned the ground with the disease and you will be at great risk of killing other puppies if you bring them there, ( even years from now ) also if you go around other peoples puppies you can give them the disease because its probably on your shoes. SO be very careful

Its a very horrible and usually leathal disease.

Best of luck to you and your baby

I've treated 5 puppies for parvo (when I worked as a vet tech). We saved all but 1. IV fluids are uber important if you can administer them, great. Antibiotics and anti nausea pills were also administered but the concoction posted earlier looks promising. The vet bills usually ran in the $1500-2000 range for about one week of treatment so if you can do this at home more power to you. If you have any other dogs everything must be cleaned with a 10% beach solution, all towels and blankets soaked in it before washing. Put some in a spray bottle and spay your hands with it after working with the puppy, then wash your hands. Yeah, that's right, bleach on the hands, nasty for the skin but if you touch the dog assume you have the virus on you. If you have gloves spray them before you take them off. Do the same with the bottom of your shoes or keep a towel soaked in the solution outside the door and step on it a bunch when exiting the room. Obviously keep any other dogs away from the puppy and everything that has touched him or any of his bodily fluids. It's a really contagious disease that you don't want to mess with. Good Luck.

Both my sisters' dogs got it. One died within 1 week. She brought the other one inside and let it use puppy pads while they bleeched the yard. They did it 4 times and since they've moved, the new owners have pets and no problems with the yard at all. Her other dog lived until regular age. Then, she got her Izzy (boxer) that is still ruling her now.
