Copper is 13 weeks now and I'm wondering when he will get this bell stuff. I sarted using the bell about two weeks ago, I was smearing peanut butter on the bell to get him to ring it. This works but he still has not rung the bell to go outside and pee/poo. How long does it take before they put two and two together? Also, any suggestions on the actual bell ringing. Is it ok to ring it yourself when taking them out or should you bump their nose into it? Let me know what you think!

Just give it time, Copper will get the idea before long. When I was training both, Charlie & Emma, I would ring the bells before opening the door to take them out. I would move the bells to the outside and ring them again when we came back in. Eventually, Copper will get curious about the bells and nudge them ever so slightly. As soon as he does that immediately get up and let him out. Soon he'll be swiping the bells louder than you ever expected.

Be patient, he'll get it eventually;)
And you really don't need to ''bump their nose into it''. Maybe a bit more research on the subject?

What kind of bells do you use? We would like to start getting Zuzu used to ringing a bell. She does a really nice job of sitting at the door when she has to go, but has only barked once or twice when it was ABSOLUTELY time to go out. I appreciate the advice.

use a cow bell

Hey ... i would definately use a cow bell.. Ive trained 3 boxers with one. Just tie the bell to a thick piece of elastic, at a good height for your boxer to reach it.. Each and EVERY time you take your dog out, take his paw or face and just gently nudge it to where it rings, then say potty out or whatever potty command you use, then take him directly out. it should only take a month or so untill he will ring it on his own!!Let me tell you, it's so exciting when they ring it by themself, then go potty!! YAY!! Good luck, and you can pick up a COWBELL at any farming store (Tractor Supply was one I had luck with)
