Good dog owners can't allow this to continue...

I think you have an obligation, sign the tickets, make them go to court and prove they vaccinate their dog. Then it would be on record that their dog has a tendency to do attack. Which will make it easier for someone else to recover damages if the dog attacks again and does more damage or hurts someone.

If Lt. was attacked twice, there's no doubt their dog has attacked other dogs. If this aggression is allowed to continue, will this dog move on to small children? This dog is a threat to society (people & dogs) at large!

You should not feel guilty if the dog gets destroyed. You have done nothing wrong. I would not recommend you put yourself at risk by contacting these people. Let the authorities handle it.

I went through the same thing when my DW's Jack Russel Terrier was attacked the first time by a Ridgeback. The owners never vaccinated their dog and they allowed it to roam the neighborhood. When I told the guy that dog owners like him disgust me, he wanted to fight me. He was in his late 50's and in a wheel chair, so I just laughed at him and I went home and called the police.

Animal Control came took the dog, and told the owner if he wanted the dog back, he would have to have it spayed, update it's vaccinations and pay a fine and my vet bills, my wife's dog had to have stitches in his back. This dog's owner chose to not take any action. I can only assume the Ridgeback was destroyed. I felt bad for the dog, but I would have felt even worse if another dog or child was attacked because I didn't take action.

Sign the tickets. Are you aware that Presa Canarios did kill a woman in California-in the hallway of her own apartment? The owner stood by and apparently didn't do much to stop it. With a dog that large when they attack there isn't much you can do to stop it.

You've obviously given this a lot of thought but others have said and I would like to repeat if you will bear with me, what if it's a child the next time or even you?

Let the authorities take this one since there may be other records of that same dog attacking other animals. No one wants to arbitrarily destroy a dog, but some common sense has to used.

I agree with the others - sign the tickets as-is. Obviously the owners are not taking care of the dog like they should and it might be better for it to be destroyed now before it hurts someone seriously and is destroyed then. :(

Not quite accurate. A couple rescued 2 Presa Canarios who had been badly abused and neglected. The dogs were raised together and bonded. Rather than emotionally scar the dogs more than they were already scarred, they decided to rescue both of them and rehabilitate them. They had JUST gotten the dogs and had not intended to keep them in their apartment long term. The wife was home alone and the dogs needed to go out. She mistakenly thought that she could handle both of the dogs on her own. On the way back into the building one of the dogs lunged and she was unable to restrain it. I'm not justifying the owners or dogs actions, I'm just saying that you should have the whole story before you site it as an example.

Sign the tickets. I think if the people were the type that would respond favorably to a phone call from you, they wouldn't be allowing the dog to run off leash in a public area. Especially after at least one previous attack. I agree that the dog is not likely to be destroyed for attempts to attack another dog. It is more likely that the people will be told to keep the dog on leash and if it attacks again while off leash that it may be taken away at that point.

Next time it may seriously injure your furbaby or worse kill him

If these people were responsible owners they would have a coller and a lead on.

I am totally against breed specific legislation, but it is irresponsible owners like this that make these laws a reality. As long as bully breeds of any kind are in the hands of owners that put other animals and humans at risk by not handling their animals in a safe manner at all times, breed legislation will continue. Because these irresponsible people allow their dogs to be at large, odds are good that they will eventually attack something. It's these attacks that cause the legislation we're seeing more of today.

I saw where someone had defended the couple in California that allowed thier two Presa Canarios to maul and kill a neighbor in the hallway to their apartment. I'm sorry, but I watched that trial from start to finish, and that woman was as irresponsible as they come, not to mention a total basket case. She knowingly took both of these dogs out together knowing she couldn't possibly restrain them in the event they wanted to get away. IMO, and the jurors and courts' opinion apparently, she is to blame for the death of her neighbor, not the Presa Canarios.

Here's an excerpt:

"Marjorie Knoller, a California attorney, was convicted in March of second-degree murder in the death of Diane Whipple, 33, who was mauled to death in 2001 by a 120-pound Presa Canario dog. The conviction, however, was overturned in June when a San Francisco judge said the evidence did not justify the verdict. Knoller and her husband, Robert Noel, were caring for two Presa Canarios for Paul John Schneider, a 38-year-old inmate and white supremacist they had recently adopted. Knoller and Noel were also found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. The manslaughter verdicts were not overturned, and the pair were sentenced to four years in prison. "

These dogs were not rescues, from all accounts I have read, they were born at a dog-breeding operation run by white supremacist prisoners, one of whom the couple actually adopted while he was in prison.

Anyway, I digress.

Sign the tickets and make these people realize they have got to be responsible when owning dogs the size and strength of a Presa Canario, before you, your dogs, or another hapless dog owner is seriously injured.

I live about 40 minutes for S.F. and followed this story closely. These people are BAD people. They did not intend to get rid of the dogs. While they had the dogs, the dogs; had bitten a resident of the apartment building, had attacked other dogs in parks and on the streets, it was also learned that the animals' previous caretaker had complained that they had killed other animals and pets on her property in the past. Don't sugar coat these people, they knew what they were doing and it wasn't doing a good deed. They were doing a favor for their client & adopted son (adopted after he was in Pelican Bay Prison), who was breeding these dogs to fight and for other illegal activity.

The Diane Whipple, the victim that was mauled was my neighbor’s lacrosse coach. The dogs were dangerous and should have never been in that situation.

Facts of the case:
- Judge James Warren said Knoller deserved the maximum because she had shown no remorse and had lied under oath in denying that she had seen the two huge dogs bite or menace others.
- The judge said that both Knoller and Noel were cavalier about Whipple's death and even blamed the dead woman in interviews.
- Court documents, including affidavits for search warrants for Noel and Knoller's apartment, suggest that authorities suspected sexual abuse of the dogs.

I'm just saying that you should have the whole story...

Sign the ticket. It is bad enough that it was your dog but what if it was a human child that was attacked. Let the court do its job!!!

This is a very touchy situation! I would say sign the tickets ONLY if you know the dogs will not be put down. If the owners are just going to be fined--sign it. It is not the dogs fault that their owners are irresponsible. However, at the same time, I understand that your dog was hurt and it would have ticked me off big time too, especially when it happened the second time. I would really make sure what is going to happen before I sign. If you were at a dog park, maybe request or complain that this couple and their dogs are banned from the park. I completely understand not wanting to put yourself or your babies in a situation where either could get hurt. Good luck...Let us know what you decide!
